With the BC Provincial Election in full force I figured it would be good to start this topic.

Comments, links, rants... You name it, posted it here

I do not know what to do? I find both parties just horrible. I can not see myself voting for the Liberals or the NDP,( no green running in my riding). So I hope there will be a good four party person I can vote for.

Jane Sterk, the leader of the B.C. Green party, looks like an aged hippy. She's running in my riding so I have to see her campaign posters evrey day.
If I could give a title to this campaign it would have to be "Choose the lesser of all evils." The Liberals are as stable as a hurricane. One minute they're trying to champion small business, then next it's the homeless, then next it's the environment, then it's healthcare, all the while not much seems to happen except we're paying more for gas and getting cheques in the mail.
The Green party is a one trick pony who would have a great chance is this was 2008 and everyone gave a rat's ass about the environment. However it's 2009 and no one is going to risk their job to save a tree. I looked on their website and was reading the section entitled 'Building a Stronger Economy'. After reading "A Green economy will..." I stopped reading.
The NDP is the NDP. Their great as an opposition party but under no circumstances should they be allowed to go any further. While the Greens would sacrifice the economy to save a tree the NDP would sacrifice the economy to fund every hair brained social scheme that anyone puts forward.
I'll be voting Liberal because no other party can be trusted not crash the economy like a 16 year old behind the wheel of a Mustang.
Another question: How will everyone be voting in the referendum regarding STV?

You got that so right.

You make great points about each of the big three parties. I do not know how I'm going to vote. Most likely Liberal unless I have a great four party candidate in my riding. As for the changing of the system I'm still up in the air. Right now I'm 55-45 for voting against it, but that could change.

How are you going to vote on it?

Back when the Liberals first came to power, I did not care for them to put it mildly. Now, I actually don't mind them that much anymore. Sure I hate the carbon tax and some of the things they've privatized, but on the whole they've done alright the last few years.

That, and the NDP do not impress me at all especially Carole James.

If I can add another potention point of discussion: who plans to vote for the STV system? I will be.

I expect the Liberals to win.

herbie @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:15 pm

I'm pro STV.
Tempted to wipe my arse with the other ballot though....

Keemo @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:19 pm

I'm Pro STV, I think we will get a more balanced legislature out of it. As for the main 2 parties, the Liberals have ruined health care, education and social services and are selling our rivers to the highest bidder. I lost all faith in the NDP during their last term in office. My vote is going Green, they can't be worse than the other options, and their economic platform makes sense.

westmanguy @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 6:29 pm

lol...B.C. politics depresses me. I follow it closely though, because its going to be my home in just over a year (I can't believe I'm going to be a resident of Vancouver and B.C. in just over a year....ahh! haha...can't wait to get out of Manitoba after grad).

If I could vote, I'd probably plug my nose and vote Liberal. The NDP government in the 90s was disastrous and doesn't deserve the votes. The Liberals are screwed up to, but they're the ones less likely to further drive the economy into the ground.

I'm expecting a close race, ending with a 3rd term (decreased) Liberal majority, and the STV to pass (which would be a good thing).

Then B.C. can be the test province for electoral reform for the other provinces to monitor.

Lucky you. Vancouver's a great city to live in (recent gang war notwithstanding), though it is expensive as hell.

westmanguy @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 7:37 pm

Oh, I'll be living frugally. In a dorm with a roommate at either UBC or SFU.

stokes @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:04 pm

I remember the NDP quite fondly, especially Glenn Clark, amazing how some politicians dont end up getting shot....lmao

Campbell isnt much better, he has had such a huge majority these last 8 years he could do anything and he took full advantage of doing everything he could do to screw us over.

I too live in Jane Sterks riding, and you're right Qball, she is a total hippy.

My biggest bitch is that the legislature hasnt sat since before the Federal election was called....this is probably the most undemocratic province in the country!!

herbie @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:18 pm

In spite of their socialist legacy the NDP was so ignorant when it came to broadband infrastructure the results of what they did with public cash lined the pockets of Telus & Bell and benefited no one.
Unless you were Indian, because free Internet was a traditonal right (or something...)
At least the Liberals listened when we said, hey these 1,000 people in this subdivision beyond the DSL range are a 'community' too.
The "ax the tax" campaign is so plebian it is offensive and beneath everything they once stood for.

On the other hand the Liberals DID sell BC Rail for no benefit to anyone in BC, they DID sell the Hydro transmission lines, they WILL sell BC Hydro itself and they'll ruin every river left with the privatized hydro contracts (which once again will not benefit any resident of BC.
And they STILL yap about "fast ferries" after trashing them so bad they couldn't unload them, bought German ones instead (once again NO benefits for BC) that were just as bad, and even sunk one and refused to force the crew to testify in open court as to what happened, (Getting a BJ instead of steering if the more-than-rumours are to be believed).
Plus they pussied out to Ottawa on softwood and now wimpily refuse to even try to do anything claiming anything will violate the agreement.

The Greens are nothing but a Rhino protest vote, they have no policy beyond environmentalism.

I would enjoy the ability to vote 1,2,3 and not give full endorsement to any one set of dickheads.

Bang on! I am more than likely to vote Liberal as well and for similar reasons. I don't support any political party 100% Provincially or Federally and at election times I weigh out the good & bad and decide based on what seems best at that time. Let's see how much BS flies around during the campaign though, lots can happen in the next month. I will vote however unlike the 40+% who don't bother. That huge non-voting group is my biggest peeve about elections, my 2nd peeve being all those friggin signs we have to look at for the next month, like we're all too stupid to remember 3-4 names/parties and have to be reminded every a few minutes by another friggin sign.

Undecided on STV, still weighing out the pros and cons.

sandorski @ Wed Apr 15, 2009 9:58 pm

Liberals are the only reasonable choice. They're basically the Socreds, there are few diehard supporters, but they move the Province in the right direction so they get support.

I'm pretty much the same way. The one thing that I really don't like about the BC Liberals is there privatization. And I really don't want BC Hydro privatized.

It seems like the Liberals are playing the political centre, but the NDP have also shifted to the centre as well. So if they are both fairly simular, why vote against the government?

I will probably vote for STV, what the heck, let BC be the guinea pig.
