STAR TREK Corporate Civil War

Kennedy is to star wars what Kurtzman is to star Trek with the caveat that Kurtzman isn't trying to burn the whole thing down out of spite. Rather, as Les Moonves, the disgraced CBS CEO, who DID hate Star Trek spiked the bowl with this marriage made in purgatory.

Viacom doesn't want to sell Trek but under the helm of Kurtman/Bad robot/J.J Abrams has become so divisive it has become a money loser and desperately needs a reboot. However, the deal Les made with Kurtzman before being shown the door is ironclad and it also cover the merchandise. Viacoms only options here is to wait out the contract (which they can't afford) or to buy out Kurtzman (which he will not agree to because he is now being paid to NOT make films).

The legacy of Trek, if it survives this, will be a shadow of what it once was.

I know I won't watch any more Trek movies until the Abrams gang is no longer making them. Discovery and Picard have their own problems but at least they're main canon, not some ridiculous butchery like the Kelvin timeline. Don't need a Kirk crew that are basically a bunch of wise-cracking goofs.

At least they’re still getting some things right. Picard was great, not perfect but very entertaining. Discovery took a while to find its feet but the last season was well done, even despite the change in show runners halfway through. There also Lower Decks which is pretty funny (at least to me).

But I totally agree that when it comes to the movie franchise, they are fucking up. The last movie was a mess and the one before it wasn’t much better. JJ Abrams doesn’t have what it takes to do the franchise justice. I know Tarantino has a ST movie still in the works but it’s going to be like that one episode of TOS where Kirk and co. end up on world where everyone’s 1930’s style gangster. It’ll be entertaining because it’s Tarantino, but I can see it pissing off the Trekkies.

To wit about JJ not caring enough about Star Trek:

Too bad it's all private business in Hollywood and they're not subject to outside interruption. An explanation of why they're putting people who either dislike the franchises (Abrams Star Trek) or want to obliterate them altogether (Paul Feig's Ghostbusters) or simply don't care in the slightest about what was built before them (Kathleen Kennedy) in charge of sequels or reboots deserves both explanations as to why. And also intervention to stop it from happening again.

I quite agree. Star Trek moved from utopian to frat boy in the first Abrams film.

I also didn't like them using the "F" word in Discovery. I don't recall if they used it in Picard.

Not that I don't salt and pepper the F word frequently, just that there is no need for it in Star Trek.

I won't watch the Tarantino Star Trek either if it gets made. What's the point of that going to be anyway? Have Spock say the n-word about a hundred times as part of a "scientific" study of ancient human speech patterns, and have Uhura giggle like an idiot at it?

I guess this is why they make so many comic book movies now. The likes of Abrams can't think up anything good on their own so all they can do is wreck the much better things that were made by much better creators. Fuckin' lowlife hacks.

‘‘Twas used in Picard as well.

An admiral said, "sheer f-ing hubris" to Picard in the second episode IIRC.

I wasn't sure if it was used, but I was sure Picard didn't use it.

Star Trek would end for me if he did. It's just wrong for such an eloquent character to resort to it. Like Data using curses in "Generations".

Cheap shock value. Stunt-booking, as they say in wrestling. The only way it would work properly would be if ex-wife Beverly Crusher showed up all pissed off at him, most likely for multiple legit reasons, and said "what the fuck is wrong with you, Jean-Luc?".

The why? $$$.

JJ had a solid record as a director and reboot specialist (along with Kurtzman). Same with Paul Feig in charge of Goostbusters. He has a good record of comedies under his belt.

I just remembered this a few days later....The time Picard cursed out some Klingon governor.
