Canadians are more similar to Americans than almost any two countries are on earth.

We do share a continent, and allegedly a language, but Americans think we are all a bunch of dope smoking pinko socialists. Not that many of us have a much higher opinion of Americans. I once had to provide translation services between a guy from Newfoundland and a tech support agent from Alabama. I had a very hard time understanding the yank, no problem understanding the Newfy, but the two could not understand each other at all
I have regular on-line conversations with Americans, and they are no way similar to Canadians, in language, knowledge of international affairs, or for that matter, geography. We won't even get into politics and patriotism, some actually believe the Department of Homeland Security, and it's power to skip over civil rights is a good thing.

I've lived in Canada, the US and England.

Except for the different colours of money, the fact that hockey isn't on the front page of the sports section, and that I have a private healh care card, there is virtually no difference between living in Canada and the US.

Canadians exaggerate the differences between the two countries to establish an identity. It is a perfect example of the Narcissism of Small Differences.

Bull shit! False conclusion!

Misguided patriotism is not limited to Canada.

I recall a fellow who would not buy a Chrysler mini-van becasue it was made in Canada. The grim truth that all big three have identical US/Canadian content and Indian rad caps is beside the point.

Why? The cultures are very much the same. Canadians are a bit more caring and less self-centered than Americans, but for the most part, Canadians and Americans are very similar.

Canadians are much closer to Americans than they are to England, and England is Canada's mother country. You plop a Canadian down anywhere in the States, and they will have more cultural signposts than a Canadian will generally have in England. A Canadian would be more familiar with what is on television, with the politicians, with the music, with the money, with the sports, with the transportation, etc. living in America than living in England.

The Narcissism of Small Differences.

For the Hollywood/media stuff, yes, but the social conventions, assumed rights and freedoms (not necessarily the same as actual)and social interaction, we are much closer to our British roots then to our neighbours to the south. We do not assume it is our <Deity of choice> given right to be armed at all times, that cops are out to persecute us, that public health care is a commy plot. We do not have the record for having the highest percentage of our population in jail, often for 'crimes' that would never come to trial in Canada. Sure, we can talk the talk, get the jokes about media shows, watch the same silly crap on the tube, but we are not the same, and Goddess willing, never will be.

My proof is living 10 years in the United States, a year in England and traveling extensively through Europe.

There are all sorts of examples of Canadians exaggerating the differences. The biggest is Medicare. Ask a Canadian what it means to be a Canadian and nine times out of ten, they'll say "Medicare."

Okay, since Medicare is only about 40 years old, what did it mean to be Canadian before then?

And how does that make Canada different from almost every other industrialized country on earth?

It doesn't. It only does if you define yourself vis-a-vis the United States. Canadians emphasize Medicare because it differentiates us from Americans, not because it is a uniquely Canadian thing.

But that's not unexpected. Given that Canada was borne and defined in part because of the United States, that America so dominates the continent, and that the peoples are so similar, its not surprising Canadians would do so.

Of course there are differences. I think the biggest differences are that Canadians tend to think more about how their actions will effect others while Americans tend to be more optimistic.

But things like guns and prison sentencing do not effect most people in their day to day lives. I have lived here for a decade and I have never seen any of my friends or people I know carry a gun. And I live in one of the gun-totingest states in America!

Drop a Canadian into the American milieu and the Canadian will find there is virtually no difference in how he or she lives their day to day lives. An English Canadian finds it far easier doing so than being dropped in the middle of the Lac St Jean region.
