Globe and Mail started yesterday a series of articles on the Canadian Immigration and Refugee system. It will continue until next Saturday.
Take a look at the first one:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20050416.IMMIGRATION16/TPStory

so, this is how it works, my friends. Imagine a guy, who wants to stay in Canada, but has no education, skills, etc. which can get him in via the official points system. Not a problem! He can just come here and file a refugee claim. While he is waiting he gets social welfare and free health care. The Government of Ontario paid about $ 115 million in social welfare to such refugee claimants in 2004. After a year, two, or three, his claim is rejected, not a problem, he just starts a neverending appealing process, which can help him stay here for 17 years or in some cases forever.

Consequences of this ridiculous, outrageous system?

1. Increasing the number of Canadians with negative feelings towards all refugees, even the real ones- the only refugees, who deserve protection in Canada, because some people start to think that all refugees are fake.

2. The local racists build up their arguments against immigration and refugees and extend their negative feelings towards immigrants in general.

3. The reputation of Canadian official documents abroad, such as Permanent resident cards, Canadian passports, etc. is getting worse, because any skillful liar can get these documents.

4. Many foreigners are tempted with this corrupt system and even when they are skilled enough to get through the official imigration system, they hesitate if it's not better to use instead the loose backdoor of Canada- the refugee system.

I think that this is terrible and the Canadian government should correct the situation! The sooner, the better!

I am a realist and I know that we cannot prevent completely fake refugees and immigrants with fake qualifications to get in, but at least, we can diminish drastically their number.
I have a solution--no more refugees.

Uh, what? I don't see the problem. So I'll repeat the title: What's wrong with our Immigration system?
