While in the past Canada has exercised a more independent foreign policy, in many ways, it has now succumbed to the imperialistic aspirations of the U.S. and NATO. The war in Afghanistan and the continued bombing in Libya have demonstrated Canada’s willingness to use military force to advance foreign policy. It appears as if they have also turned back the clock by further embracing the monarchy and renewing its strategic partnership with Britain and the Commonwealth at large. Under the influence of a declining Anglo-American Empire, Canada has shed its peacekeeping image in favor of a more aggressive and militaristic doctrine. In the coming years, Canada will be expected to contribute even more to global security including participation in future U.S.-NATO military operations.

The author of that article fails to take several things into account, first and foremost he states that we have ignored our peacekeeping past which I disagree with.

The current conflicts in the world are less about nation vs nation where it was clear who the two sides were and therefore easy to keep apart by placing troops in between. The current conflicts are mostly internal with breakaway factions and they dont always wear a uniform.

The UN is a failed organization, and it failed because it gave a the power of veto to select nations which handicapped its ability to act, look no further than Chechnya, the Russians ran amok killing people and the UN couldnt do anything because Russia holds a veto on the Security council.

By having closer ties to the US, Britain, New Zealand and Australia we are maintaining alliances with countries that are similar to our own in terms of beliefs, lifestyles and in some cases a very common history and in the last 100 years have shared the field of battle with.
