DrCaleb DrCaleb:
No, it's always illegal. :( Unless like Tricks, you are hired to break in, and there there is only a limited and pre-defined scope to that break in.

Don't get me wrong, I've fudged stuff to get around restrictions at companies.

I had a retailer that wouldn't let me order a part to pickup in store at the store near me, because it wasn't in stock. Apparently they changed the policy of shipping to the store and allowing for pickup. So when I put through the order, I intercepted the post packet, changed the store parameter to the one I wanted, and sent it on through.

Surprisingly it actually worked. The order got submitted, and a friend of mine working for the company confirmed that it was put through to ship to the location I wanted.

Then I bought it elsewhere because fuck them.

I think the litmus here is "Colour of Right"
I believe this not to be an Indictable because Trev has effectively divested from the forum and we need to perform maintenance on the server in order to prolong it's life.

Further, whoever is doing the maintenance is not benefiting from this beyond protecting their right to reasonable enjoyment of this forum.

This is why I said, per the letter of the law, absolutely this is illegal; but under the spirit the law was written in, I don't feel this is a crime.

Note: I am not a lawyer.

DrCaleb @ Thu Dec 05, 2019 9:44 am

I don't disagree with your reasoning. And logging on to the server and performing maintenance isn't depriving the owner of anything.

But cybercrime law is pretty specific. If the intrusion is unauthorized, it's illegal regardless of the intent.

Yeah, is there a way to get trev's attention.

I get an SQL Error message when I try to enter the Entertainment category.

Too bad. Nobody gets to see the Black Widow trailer.

Hell any selection from the top menu bar other than Last Visit or Recent Topics logs me out or gives an SQL error. Has for ages.
