I wish, i dont have the time right now to learn how to develop an app for iphone. But the http://m.canadaka.net/ kinda works, just not a nice fancy GUI.

It's too bad that thread died. We need a Android app that would help generate revenue and bring new people. What kind of features would we be looking for?

bootlegga bootlegga:
Do you have a private Paypal account I can send money to Trev? I have some funds there from writing that I can send your way to help out.

Nope, me and me wife are banned from PayPal for life, no appeals, total bullshit.

My account was suddenly banned because this site had a link to a site that contained porn, no warning, no chance to fix or appeal. And then a couple days later my Wife's paypal, that she used for her business was banned and also my gaming clan =CKA= was also banned. I guess because they all shared the same billing address. Total crap, you could say we are not big fans of PayPal. If you search the internet there are SOOO many stories like this and worse.

We had switched to Authorize.net for my wifes business, but its pricy wit a $25 a month fee. But This summer i found out about STRIPE, which is an awesome simple credit card processer, with no monthly fees. So I can only accept credit cards, not PayPal.

Its been a huge hassel, many ad-networks, clients and stuff I want to personally buy on the internet only accept PayPal. And in Canada there is no good alternative.

I stil pop in from time to time Trev so Post the 'how to pay...' via Stripe, and I'm in.

If I ever get my Visa edged away from max, I'll donate what I can.

Maybe a pre-paid...

Canadaka @ Tue Dec 17, 2013 10:11 pm

Thanks for the interest in donating to the site!

I have setup a simple recurring payment subscription form for Stripe. Its on the facebook.canadaka subdomain because I have SSL setup there and I wanted this form secured.

I do not save billing or credit card info, it is sent securely to Stripe via encrypted SSL for processing.

For a monthly recurring donation of $2, $5 or $10 use this.
https://facebook.canadaka.net/stripe/

For a one time donation use this donation page
http://www.trevormay.ca/donate/

Donations to either spot I will add to the donations list and you will be given gold status, which will hide all ads on the site for you.

I'm sure a Politwitter app would be somewhat popular, likely moreso than a forum app. Unfortunately forum apps aren't significantly popular in the slightest, from what I've seen, but twitter? That's still a thing, isn't it?

I would think a forum app would be neat for regulars, but not so great at bringing in new users of Trev's software. A strictly news-oriented version of CKA (with no comments), perhaps, or an alternate-CKA that works off of guest comments/Facebook only comments. Otherwise, with our membership-required status, it would be limited at best. It would be easier as something connected to Twitter or Facebook and not very much connected to CKA itself. Selling out? Hard, but Facebook and Twitter are big money making resources for many smaller organisations.

I've noticed Facebook integration here on CKA (That I think is partially broken) but I don't think it fits on our forum atmosphere. The regulars clearly stick to the forum. The extra sections are in utter disuse. There hasn't been a comment from a regular user in the photo section in over 2 years. Just drop in users who never return. I'm sure that section is mostly taking up abhorent bandwidth from Google bots and the like, and little more.

I would ultimately suggest a trim down. I do know that these sections are meant for CKA to be an all-in-one resource for Canada related information and Canadian patriotica, but it isn't helping the site stay up. I'm talking out of my ass on that one, obviously you (Trev) would know which areas of the site are actually recieving traffic, and for all I know when the ads were up, the pictures were able to pay for the bandwidth they cost you. Right now though, I see these sections unused, with the regulars huddled here on the forum.

My suggestion would most definitely be a Facebook/Twitter-centric version of CKA completely unconnected from the main website. Algorythms exist already for "aggregated news" and are extremely popular right now. One would just need to do that for Canada-centric sources. I doubt such an app could be user-submitted. I also would figure, with it being Facebook, you'd need to have a hands-off moderative approach, depending on how admissable that is for an app. I'd start with Android, as that is the most ubiquitous mobile operating system at the moment, and it is free to make apps for, unlike with Apple, where you must pay for a license.

A paid app version of course, for removing ads and potential bonus features.

My thoughts on the matter, I suppose.

TL;DR: Slim the site down to its bones, which is the forum and the news aggregated front page, but mostly the forum, and consider returning ads for non-donating members. With that suggestion, I am absolutely okay with the need to purge the porn-related threads for the sake of the financial stability of the site. At the very least, remove the most bandwidth-hogging sections, as you did with User File Hosting. Consider a Politwitter app and potentially a different service with similiar motives as CKA, providing an ad-supported aggregated Canadian news mobile app connected to a major social media site and not CKA.

I'll likely donate after Christmas. It'll be meager, again, unfortunately.
I'm very glad more well-off users here have come forward to contribute to this project.
Good luck, Trev.

I sent you a donation via E-Transfer Trevor. I wish it could be more, but it's been a pretty tough year for us.

Same here. Around Christmas there is no such thing as spare money here.

I'm glad to help.. Knowing that Trevor has a $2220 bill, I'd feel like I was stealing from the guy if I didn't.

Maybe the guilt will bring a few more donations...

Seriously though, CKA needs to be at least revenue neutral for it to survive.

The Stripe thingy worked just fine.

I agree, and glad you guys have taken the initiative to do what you can.

Sadly, guilt can't get any blood from this stone for a little while, :(

Thank you so much for the donations, I was not expecting all that. I was feeling pretty down about the whole situation, but the combination of this support and Google re-activating Adsense for the site has changed that.

I seriously thought Google wouldn't unban the site, it had been almost 4 months. It was crazy timing that it was unbanned probably 15 minutes after I posted this thread.

With Adsense revenue coming in again, Bart's forum sponsorship and I'm getting one of the other sites I host to start paying $20 a month, it should be ok. It should be at least breaking even now.

I'm still several hundred dollars in the red for the year, but these donations have taken a big dent out of that.

-------------------------

I wanted Bart to test this first and everything worked fine. I created a special page that handles setting up monthly recurring donations at $2, $5 or $10 a month, or $15 a year. Any of these will grant you Gold member status.

With all the laughs and good times that this and =CKA= bring me, it's easily worth it.

I'm here more than I watch TV, so it makes sense to put the same sort of entertainment money towards a great cause. [B-o]
