I genuinely cannot understand how anybody can possibly fail to acknowledge the trauma of the women in the article.

We do acknowledge the trauma.
We just don't think they should get a lump sum, to spend however the hell they please.
I agree with you people who have this sort of thing happen to them (loss of a child, in any way) should get the necessary help. I am sure there are plenty of mourning/grieving counseling groups around tho.
