My eldest son turns 16 next month and has been bugging us about a vehicle. I thought about getting him dual purpose a starter bike. I was looking at 2008 Honda CRF 150R to begin with. he has had some experience with smaller dirt bikes on the farm.. I figured since he's in the boonies a dual purpose bike would be better. Any suggestions from riders? he's going to be taking lessons this fall, before he's allowed to drive highways.

Sorry,

I thought this thread was gonna be about how Gregor Robertson became the bicycle king of Vancouver.

The CRF 150R is a good bike, or the CRF 230L. Stick to a 4 banger, much quieter than a 2 pop.

Noise isn't a concern...he's on a farm.

Go 250cc or bigger. He'll be way past anything smaller in no time, especially since he has previous riding time.

Maybe as a graduation present in a few years.

I would still go with the 4s, more bottom end torque. Most 2s have a definite power band which can (to an inexperienced rider)cause problems on wet tarmac.

I'd go with the 250 as well. If he has any kind of a head on his shoulders he'll be carefull with it for the approximately 12 minutes it would take to outgrow the 150. A 250 will actually do decent speeds on the highway as well so it'll be good enough until he can buy his own in a few years.

Also, make sure he does have a head on his shoulders. Even a small bike is dangerous if you're trying to show off with it.

I'm with them^^ on the 250. Good all round bike that will have enough jam to last him several years. My brothers all ride 'big' bikes, but a couple of them have 250's. Lots of 'go' for backroads and hill climbing.

he's using my BiL's 125 right now, to check the fence line and to move cattle from one pasture to the next but hasn't done too much riding on an actual road except the dirt roads that run along the farm. however, he's discovered girls(and vice versa) and out in the country, as I and many of you know, your chances for encounters are limited without a vehicle.....and I ain't buying him a car or truck....they increase the likelihood of good things happening for a guy on back roads.

Gotta go with the group, especially when I read the kid is using a 125 already.
The wife started on a 250 2stroke, easy enough to have fun with, just strong enough
to be able for a putt on a real road.

I started on a 400, which was prolly a bit much for being green.

Same here. Just to echo what everyone else said, go with the 250, as he will rapidly outgrow/get bored with, the 150 before he burns the first tank of gas!
