Larry Ellison apparently needs more money so he can buy another Hawaiian island.

FAQ here: https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java ... -faqs.html

They want US$2.50 per computer, per month to use Java.

That's in addition to paying for the software to use it in applications.

Net worth of $63.5 billion, the seventh highest in the world:

The worst problem facing humanity is that billionaires are allowed to exist at all. :|

I'm sure there's some guy in Venezuela who wants you dead because you live so well.

Worry about your own situation and put the envy aside.

I don't like Ellison because he was a rude bastard to my elderly father in law some ten years ago. His being a billionaire is irrelevant to me.

You'll see the truth one day. Can you imagine the kind of world it would be if a couple thousand sadistic sociopaths don't own 95% of the wealth of the entire planet? I can.

If only we murder the rich people then we will have Utopia?

Every time that idea has been implemented it's been followed by famine and war and the deaths of millions of poor fools who thought that if only there were no rich people then maybe the poor people would be better off.

It has never worked that way and it never will.

China is a perfect example. In successive paroxysms of blood letting they purged their society of wealthy people, educated people, creative people, and anyone else who had an 'unfair' advantage.

The result was 100 million dead people. Most of them poor, ignorant, and powerless.

So how did China improve the lives of the poorest people in China?

They allowed people to prosper and become wealthy.

China has billionaires.

And poor people are better off because of it.

I guess worshipping monsters is hardwired too deep into the human psyche to ever be able to get rid of it. Too bad. This might have been a nice planet to live on if doing what's best for Mammon uber alles wasn't the overwhelming urge of far too many of the drones. :|

Envy only kills you.

Imagine the foot of a laughing rich man stomping down on the face of humanity, for the rest of forever. Well, considering how long it's been going on for, there's no need to really imagine it. It's reality, and really always has been.

Good thing for the more entertaining fiction that describes so well what's going on in the real world. Master. Serf. Waste. Just be sure to be suitably grateful to them for the scraps you're given.

Depends on which Java product you mean. The Software Development Kit is different than the client side interpreter.

We are an Oracle shop, and we've been scanning and unistalling Java from systems that don't need it since they announced this fiasco.

Oracle makes it really hard to not consider other alternatives. If you want to use Oracle DB on a virtual Windows server (and you are an idiot), you are looking at $15k per year per processor core. Not just per processor, but any core in the cluster that it could possibly run on. Newer servers can have 28 cores, for 2 or more processors. So, that's $420k per processor, $840k per server. If you have fault tolerant clusters, that's $1.68M initially, perhaps 25% of that annually. 8O

On TOP of the licensing for Windows, VMWare, and licensing for whatever backup and monitoring that cluster needs.

This is why we can't have nice things.
