Canada needs to get in on this. Quickly.

China WILL invade Taiwan before 2049. The US knows this and is building ships like it is going out of style. If Canada ever wants to be seen as anything more than some banana republic it need to put more that words to its commitments. The British Upholder subs we got as hand me downs were only supposed to be stop gaps after we retired the Oberons and are already nearing the end of their service.

We need a replacement program now or we should just pack it in. Subs are the only feasible counter to Chinese expansionism. The CCP is a threat to us all.

Probably why we weren't invited.

Agreed on both points.

China is going to try to invade Taiwan sooner rather than later, and we're going to wind up part of that conflict.

I think we should talk to South Korea about getting some Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarines. They are AIP, which means they can operate for extended periods (up to 19,000 KM!) underwater, including in the Arctic, and as South Korea demonstrated yesterday, can be outfitted with sub launched ballistic missiles (ours need not be nuclear armed):

That's because the last few generations of Canadians have largely preferred tax cuts or social programs (depending on their political leaning) instead of investing in our sovereignty and influence around the world.

Yep, that we have. And it's not going to change anytime soon.
Nobody's interested in military influence or see an immediate threat to sovereignty. Te game's about money not armies. We're a minor player.

There's nothing substantive for the military in any of the party platforms. A weak national desire by the Conservatives to try to get the military funding closer to 2% GDP ("required" by NATO) is all I saw.

When you're a minor military player, like Canada, you rely on alliances. Plus, military spending often creates beneficial spin-offs to industry.

We're dealing with decades of neglect of our military.

France is pissed that Australia bailed on their subs...

$1:
“The world is a jungle,” the former French ambassador to Washington, Gérard Araud, observed on Twitter. “France has just been reminded this bitter truth by the way the US and the UK have stabbed her in the back in Australia. C’est la vie.”

I agree we need to rely on alliances, and that we've had decades of neglect (going back to the late 60s IMHO).

However given how budget conscious the two main parties are, they should be looking to get ships built elsewhere to save on costs and speed up construction. Of course you and I know that won't happen because it would mean all sorts of political pork can't be handed out to win votes.

Well its great to see that everyone is getting ready for WW3. Here is an idea: instead of spending billions of our own dollars rearming, wouldn't it make more sense to cut off China's income stream that is directly responsible for financing their growing military? Foreign companies setting up shop in China are giving China the money that it needs to build its military, and throw weight around the Pacific region. Lets enact a total embargo of all goods made in China. Lets demand that our companies that are doing business in China leave immediately. Its going to be hard for China to grow their military when their tax base evaporates overnight. Its going to be hard for China to project power abroad when millions of their own citizens are going hungry. Millions of citizens who are just now getting a taste of the good life that do not want to go back to living on a collective farm. Millions of hungry disgruntled citizens might call for a new revolution. Anyways China will have way too many internal problems to worry about to be looking to expand power abroad. A large number of those factories can be relocated to India. India can start growing their military with the proceeds. Vietnam and Australia as well. Japan can reclaim some industries like tv's and consumer electronics that they have lost to China. They can start rebuilding their military as well. Seriously rebuilding. Its time to remove all those restrictions that we put on them after WW2. They are going to be doing a majority of the fighting if the shit hits the fan in that area. No sense in them having their hands tied behind their backs if we expect them to kick some serious ass like they used too.

Lets take a multi pronged approach here. Military alliances. Rebuilding militaries, but most important is to cut off the foreign money supply to China. Send it to places that are standing up to China to help them rebuild their military. Cut off China's money supply. Rearm China's enemies on their borders and in their sphere of influence and use the money that was going to China to do it. Conduct a full court psychological warfare campaign against China. Create massive unemployment, massive food shortages, massive energy shortages and blackouts, flood their country with cheap higrade opiates (like they are doing to us), sew the seeds of revolution, encourage trouble on China's borders.

We Americans used to be good at this sort of thing. We had a plan to bankrupt the Soviets and we stuck to it. Then we turned into a bunch of pussies. We got on this bullshit "nation building" kick. "We are here to help you establish democracy!!!" Fuck that!!! The military's job is NOT to nation build. Its job is to put some boot in some ass. They should not be there to help people, they should be there to kill people. China is only rising today because we Americans turned into a bunch of pussies. There is still time to turn it around, but not much time. Take the chains off of Japan. Release the inner natural killer that is in their DNA. No one hates China more than Japan. No one laid a bigger smack down on China's ass than Japan. Get them back to their fighting weight and ready to kick some Sino ass. Same with Vietnam. Same with India. Same with Taiwan. Build these countries economies and militaries drastically. China should be more worried about protecting their own borders than expanding them. The people living in the area should be able to keep China at bay simply by redirecting the money that China is now getting through foreign investments to the people in the area willing to stand up to China. We westerners should play a minimal secondary military response to China. Let the local people in the area that really hate China take the lead militarily.

That ship sailed long ago. I ran for office directly opposing NAFTA for this very reason. China has what it needs from us already. Cutting them off now will slow them down but that will only mean they speed up their timetable at this point.

CDN_PATRIOT @ Thu Sep 16, 2021 7:03 pm

Canada's only option is clear: Hurry up with the new surface combatant warships, arm them to teeth, and expedite the purchase of new fighter planes (and make sure to have double the number we currently have in CF-18s, if not MORE).

Time to arm up and prepare for battle!
