DrCaleb DrCaleb:

A 'Romeo and Juliet' ending is tragic, but Juliet first doesn't go insane out of the blue and kill everyone in Genoa with her pet dragon so that Romeo feels the need to stab her to death to protect the rest of the world. It doesn't fit the 'just and pure' image of Juliet the writers spent 10 years grooming.

But she didn't go insane "out of the blue". All the signs were there from the beginning that she was an egocentric megalomaniac with an entitlement syndrome who didn't shy away at all from carnage and that she was more than willing to kill in order to achieve her vision of a greater good. Her relative kindness to those who joined her, or those who didn't oppose her, or her welcome willingness to inflict harsh justice on those who were obviously evil, helped obscure the reality that she was a different kind of mad. Viewers who weren't paying attention to the subtext of the entire Dany storyline, myself included for most of the series, fell into some kind of an aw-shucks infatuation with the small pretty girl who could perform miracles and who'd been treated horribly by almost every male around her and it led us to believe she was harmless. She wasn't harmless at all, because from the beginning this version of Juliet was walking around with three nuclear weapons in her baggage and an open willingness to use them when the time came.

Mid-point of season one:
$1:
Jorah Mormont - "you have a gentle heart"
Daenerys Targaryen (very angry) - " I do NOT have a gentle heart!"

Dany didn't actually con or fool anyone, at least not deliberately. She was actually fairly honest about everything she did and said. It was more like no one could believe what she was saying because it seemed too huge to accomplish, at least not by some "mere" girl. But it was always there, for anyone with eyes to see it.

And like Tyrion said in the finale, “we” all overlooked her maniacal proclivities because she did it to the bad people

And there was various kinds of madness throughout the show. Ramsey's overt sadism. Joffrey & Cersei's petty selfish cruelty. Aerys II's blatant apocalyptic insanity. And as the end product of centuries worth of multi-generational incest it's kind of amazing on Dany's part that she could pass as normal for so long before giving in to what her power offered her - in reality that much incest would normally mean she'd be born with one eye, webbed feet, and live for maybe two hours after being born.

It's a good thing that Jon will probably live north of the Wall for the rest of his life. If the fire-and-blood in his Targaryen DNA kicks in one day as he gets older the world will be safer with him under the watchful eye of the Wildlings, given their leanings towards anti-authority and absolutely no interest in the nonsense and viciousness of dynastic rulers.

Why did Tyrion turn into such a bumbling dummy in the last 2 seasons and why would the Daenarys who's one bad hair day away from burning a city to the ground and turning civilians en mass into mounds of white ash tolerate it?
