In no particular order:
1)The longest day
2)Das boot
3)Saving private Ryan
4)We were soldiers
5)Casablanca

I realize that Casablanca is not your typical shoot em up war story. I like the fact that Casablanca was shot in 1942, during the war. Most war films are shot after the fact. In 1942 allied victory was not guaranteed. I can only imagine the terror felt living through those times. The scene where the French and Germans are competing singing over each other in the bar is pretty emotional too. You have to wonder how it would feel to know that your country had already lost the war, and been split in two. You have to pretend to get along with your conqueror, all the time wishing him ill will. The international intrigue of different peoples from warring and neutral nations all hanging out in the same nightclub adds to the tension as well. Choosing between the woman that you love, or letting her go to help the war effort. Love, betrayal, suspense,...Casablanca has it all.

Is it just me but it seems everyone forgets the movie the Thin Red Line on their lists. IMO it's ranks with Private Ryan as one of the better war movies of the last 15 years.

But my favorites are still the older ones and for some reason I like alot of the foreign ones.

The Burmese Harp,
Stalingrad,
Fire on the Plains
Ran
The Flowers of War
Kagemushu

Just to mention a few.

Question though. Has anyone see the movie the "Men of Yamato"?

Wolf1412 @ Thu Sep 19, 2013 6:42 am

The Light Horseman
Odd Angry Shot
Band of Brothers
Pacific
Das Boot
Run Silent Run Deep
Black Hawk Down
Tears of the Sun
Zulu

To name a few

6) Kelly's Heros

I have a steel fitter in my shop who blew up a bridge for the filming of that movie (Kelly's Heroes) while he was a young engineer in the Yugoslav Army.

The Cruel Sea ... I actually read the book before I saw the movie! BTW, there was a quite good Hollywood feature film made about life on a Canadian Corvette during the war ... "Corvette K225"...quite a good movie, directed by Howard Hawks, starring Randolph Scoot and quite a bunch of Hollywood regulars:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvette_K-225

The fictitious corvette is the HMCS Donnacona (actually the name of the Montreal Naval reserve unit) and K225 is the hull # of HMCS Kitchener. I have a VHS copy (!) that I must digitize to keep it alive. It is worth watching and it is at least as good (I think better) than The Cruel Sea. They are similar movies in theme but the Cruel Sea was made a good decade and some later and is, therefore, probably a knock-off.
