Milk quotas Jonny... they give the farmer the right to sell a certain quantity of milk per year. If they could sell directly to the consumer, it would be hard to calculate and control. The other reason was to assure a safe product.
The last time I was able to get milk and cream directly from a farmer was in the mid 80s.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I don't recall us kids dying off like flies because we lived in farming country and drank milk that came straight from the cow though.

Yeah its one those things that drives me nuts. Someone has decided that in the name of safety I can't buy the milk my neigbour gives his family. Next year I'll make more syrup and arrange a trade. I hate taking something for nothing.
