With restrictions lifting across Canada as a sixth COVID-19 wave hits parts of the country, individual responsibility and personal choice appear to be the default public health measure, leaving some asking: when will it be safe to stop wearing face masks?

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavir ... -1.5844170

I am continuing to wear a mask at work (because... retail) and while in public settings (stores, services) at least for now. I am not 100% convinced that we are in the clear though it is a good sign that overall hospitalizations are down.

I almost set up a poll to ask how everyone feels about the mask mandate being dropped but I did not want to start another covid related thread. Thoughts on this?

None of the recent events, like the freedumb truckers or even the full-capacity NHL games, have set off any superspreader problems. As such I think it's safe to drop any official mask mandates all across the country, even for schools. Only the medical facilities appear to have the justification to keep them in place. We seem to be past the worst of it given that omicron turned out to be way less severe than delta was. Keep the masks around, just in case, for future use given that this upcoming winter's flu season could be a wild one for those unfortunate bastards who might get infected with both the flu and COVID at the same time. Other than that it's back to normal, IMO, and if this was World War Two the sirens would be sounding the all-clear telling everyone to carry on.

I'll just add the caveat that anyone who gives another person a bad time for choosing to keep wearing a mask is a genuine POS and should mind their own damn business. Keep your whore mouths shut, you disgusting Trump/Alex Jones/Ezra Levant-worshipping assholes!

Pretty much my way of thinking right now. I do feel a bit more relaxed but I'm also still dealing with the aftermath of a fire in a neighbouring business that had affects on my workplace so some residual smokiness still remains. The mask definitely helps with that plus the benefits of not having to deal with those who drown themselves in perfume/colognes that trigger my allergies.

I have been posting in this thread evidence that Europe and Asia are experiencing a strong 5th wave, as is Quebec and parts of the US. The UN WHO warned a couple pages back that this pandemic is far from over, and we should expect a lull this spring and summer, but we will get waves this fall and winter.

And Hospitalizations are down, but the fourth wave was so bad that they have not fallen below the level of the third wave yet!

I am still wearing it, especially in crowds. I wear an N95 to Costco. I limit my time in crowded places.

Pfizer, Moderna vaccines aren’t the same; study finds antibody differences

$1:
An early hint of this was some real-world data that found startling differences in the effectiveness of the two vaccines, despite both shots performing nearly identically in Phase III clinical trials—95 percent and 94 percent. Amid last year's delta wave, a Mayo Clinic study found that Pfizer's effectiveness against infection dipped to 42 percent while Moderna's only fell to 76 percent.

According to a new study in Science Translational Medicine, such differences might be explained by evidence that the two vaccines spur the immune system to produce slightly different antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

Good to know. The fourth dose is coming out. I guess I will be taking it seeing as how all my previous doses have been pfizer. I need all the help I can get at my age. Not to mention that I am surrounded by hundreds of drunken assholes at my job that seem to think that it is ok to touch me against my will and invade my personal space as they bitch about losing all their money in the casino. Like somehow I am going to make things better for them. Separating fools from their paychecks is what we do here. This town was NOT built on winners.

Casinos are gathering places for the statistically challenged. ;)

But, but the neighbour only spends about $200 a week at the casino, and she must;ve won over $3000 just last year alone!

Unless they are idiots, they know what the stats are, they just think that they can beat them somehow. They also remember the high of winning and easily forget the low of losing.

Deep down I know that casinos are a scam, but I limit myself to $50 and play roulette until I double my money or lose it all. If I lose my $50, I figure it's not much different than paying for a crappy movie or a lousy meal at a restaurant.

At least that's the way I rationalize my trip to the casino every few years.

When I was young, my buddies thought they figured out a way to win at Sic-Bo (a game that picks 3 - 18 and you can play combos, high, low, etc.

Basically you'd bet $1 on big or small (about 48% chance of winning), and if you won, you'd take your buck. If you lost, you'd double your bet to $2. And then $4, $8, $16, $32, etc. The problem is if the spin goes bad more than 7 times in a row, you can only bet $200 when you need to bet $264 - and that's just to win back your original $1 bet!

We tried it a couple times and it generally worked okay until that streak hit, then you lost a shit ton. That's when I adopted my just have fun and bet a few bucks mentality on the odd time I go to the casino.
