$1:
Sex diseases in US surge to record high

Washington (AFP) - Sexually transmitted diseases surged to a record high in the United States last year, with more than two million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis nationwide, officials said Tuesday.

This was "the highest number ever," said the annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report released today by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Most of the new cases -- 1.6 million in 2016 -- involved chlamydia, a bacterial infection that affects both men and women.

Gonorrhea also increased among men and women last year, but the steepest rise was among men (22 percent), said the report.

Nationwide, gonorrhea cases reached 470,000, with a large share of new gonorrhea cases among men who have sex with men.

These trends are "particularly alarming" because of the growing threat of gonorrhea becoming resistant to the last recommended treatment, according to the CDC report.

Syphilis cases numbered 28,000, a rate that increased nearly 18 percent from 2015 to 2016.

Most cases of syphilis occur among men -- mainly gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

But women too saw a 36 percent increase in rates of syphilis.

There were more than 600 cases of syphilis among newborns -- known as congenital syphilis -- a 28 percent increase in a single year.

These syphilis cases led to "more than 40 deaths and severe health complications among newborns," said the report.

"Every baby born with syphilis represents a tragic systems failure," said Gail Bolan, director of CDC's Division of STD Prevention.

"All it takes is a simple STD test and antibiotic treatment to prevent this enormous heartache and help assure a healthy start for the next generation of Americans."

Experts say despite growing concerns about antibiotic resistance, these three STDs can all be cured with antibiotic treatment.

If left untreated, however, they can lead to infertility, life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased risk for HIV transmission.

"Increases in STDs are a clear warning of a growing threat," said Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

"STDs are a persistent enemy, growing in number, and outpacing our ability to respond."

They don't offer any hypothesis as to why the spike in cases?

It's all coincidental to the war the GOP has been waging on organizations like Planned Parenthood who have the mission to prevent STD infections.

What is Planned Parenthood or anyone else supposed to do? Put the condom on for these idiots?

You forgot to blame the Muslims Bart.

You know, this is actually one area the Muslims generally do well in.

Islamic countries are well below the per capita norms of Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe. The only exception being Iran that for about the past twenty years has reported the highest rate of chlamydia in the Islamic world.

Take funding away from the groups that hand out free condoms and educate people about this kind of thing and this is a foreseeable consequence.

Stop teaching kids to keep it in their pants and that's also a foreseeable consequence.

A lifetime ago I did a spell at Subic Bay and was told straight up that going to Olongapao for an hour of fun came with a lifetime of pain.

I avoided Olongapao and guess what? My dick didn't spout fountains of pus in my shorts.

Amazing how that works.

Oh, and condoms are no defense against the crap the whores in 'longapao had. 8O

Preaching Abstinence doesn't work. It's another failed conservative theory like trickle down economics or Obamas Kenyan birth.

Mike Pence triggered a low-level AIDS epidemic in Indiana when he cut funding to the clinics and groups that were helping keep a lid on it. It's actually still a real threat, because only those with money or insurance can afford the daily barrage of pills to keep it at bay.

Not that the righties care though. All that holy faggot-slaying disease comes directly from Jesus himself and it's a sin to try to prevent it. Say, when can we fire up the thread that says being against smoking means you're a communist and not a freedom-lover? How about some extra lead in your water supply, low-class ingrates? Might as well go for broke with the broken brain approach to science and health care that's so popular with the fringe players.

Believing that people can't control themselves is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Some human problems are best solved with personal discipline and personal accountability.

But if you'd like to buy a box of condoms and try your luck in Olongapao I'msure we can fix you up so you can demonstrate to everyone the effectiveness of condoms at preventing dick rot.

Human nature is what it is, and pretending you can force 100% of the population into behaving a certain way with nothing more than puritanical lecturing and moralizing is ludicrous. This is the inevitable result of your failed logic.

And that the promiscuous members of society will naturally die away due to their ill considered behavior is Darwinism in action.

I suppose that's the success of your logic.

But if the number is surging to record highs then clearly there's something happening that's causing a problem and which needs addressing, no? Otherwise why did you start this thread?

Whatever happened to AIDS? For those of us coming of age in the 80's thats all we heard about. We were going to get it if we went to the dentist. Mosquitoes were going to spread it. Fear was every where. The AIDS quilt was getting bigger by the day. Every day there was a new story on the news about AIDS. There was no way I was not going to use a condom. The sexual revolution came to a grinding halt. I honestly cannot remember the last time I heard a story on the news about AIDS. It would appear as though the fear of having unprotected sex is a thing of the past with these exploding STD rates.
