$1:
According to a new report from the Legatum Institute, a think tank based in London, 94 percent of Canadians believe they have the freedom to live their lives as they choose, while roughly 92 percent believe the country is a good place for immigrants. Canada, the report found, is the freest country in the entire world. It’s also the most tolerant of immigrants. (Disclosure: Foreign Policy’s Democracy Lab channel is published in partnership with Legatum.)

The United States, the self-declared “Land of the Free,” ranked 15th for personal freedom. According to the most recent data made available by Legatum, 87 percent of people surveyed expressed satisfaction in their ability to live their lives as they see fit. And the United States didn’t rank too far behind Canada on the question of how welcome immigrants are, with more than 84 percent of respondents saying they believed it was a good place for them to live.

But...but those horrible Fascists in the CPC destroyed our freedom.

That's the fun thing about the West. Freedom is all in the feeling.

True freedom lies in the right to resist wrongful authority. Free men will do such things.

In the socialist world there is a difference in the interpretation of freedom. We in the West have the freedom to, while they espoused a freedom from.

You joke, but some of the most oppressive governments in history started with the mass surveillance of their population by an unaccountable police force. That's what Bill C-51 is all about! Moar government in my internetz! You are with us or you are with the child pornographers!

Should people just accept it as something they cannot change, or vote the fuckers out?

Keep in mind the daupin supported it too, and the LPC said they'd get rid of the GST once in power. Naw, they'll keep the bad shit and just say, 'but we didn't legislate this.'

I'm going to just tell you you're incorrect and that anyone seeking information on this specific topic would do better to look the philosophy up for themselves than to take this kind of statement at face value.

Sometimes voting them out just isn't enough.

Shep is right and you'd do well not to argue with him on this one.

But you will anyway.

And even harder are the rich ones, since they're morally above reproach and democracy, as they should be, being the great stewards of employed society that they are, our rights and freedoms are theirs to disclaim.

Saying "he's right" is easy.

I believe in freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom of conscious, yet I'm a socialist. So...?

I'm sensing a horseshoe theory coming this way...

Possibly. A C-51 revamp is supposedly high on his 'to do list'. I'll wait till he's sworn in as PM before finding displeasure in his performance. ;)

You are are you? A socialist by whose definition?

We wouldn't want to impose something as bourgeois as an education on you now would we. Every socialist movement, government and group that has existed to date, you've vehemently denied they were 'socialist'.

Well when you start going on about 'politics' and 'economics' I sense something that's attached to a horse too.....only it's not its shoe.

The USSR and China was socialist by whose definition? Not Marx, that's pretty well obvious.

Marxist-Leninism and such are "socialist" in their theories, yes. Not so much with their practices, but yeah, they consider themselves socialist. I deny they're "communist", or at least that they don't represent "the state of communism" in that Marx wasn't thinking "Imperial Third-World Illiterate Shithole Russia" when he dreamt up his post-capitalist stateless utopia. They changed and manipulated the original theories.

What information do you have on socialist (which kind? Anarchistic, like me? "democratic socialist"? Marxist-Leninist? Or all of them?) movements actually supporting "freedom from" efforts? Is that in a manifesto or constitution somewhere? It's a bullshit argument from the cold war. They hate our freedoms and want to take our freedoms so let's keep shouting freedom until they wither away. Very few, if anyone at all, is actually arguing that we should value being "free from" over "free to".

For the actual socialist perspective (for free!), having both is the ideal.

I imagine this the type of witty thing you write at the top of essays of students you disagree with.
