Actually, in this case yes, it's too late. Your average deity (like Vulcan) requires the sacrifice BEFORE the avoidable action.

I imagine a sciencey guy like Ray already knows this but isn't it interesting that Alfred Wegener who some call the Father of plate tectonics (and continental drift theory for that matter) had to battle the scientific "consensus" of the day.

One might say he was a "denier."
