Canada Kicks Ass
Censorship (moderating)

Ditto. I've never used my 'Ban' button, but I'm not afraid to start now.
Calumny @ Mon Nov 08, 2004 5:27 pm

To paraphrase the Liquor Control Board of Ontario line:

'You are your own censorship board'.

I don't consider a moderator's request that people conduct their conversation in a civil manner to be censorship.

Mr.Can-Euro @ Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:32 pm

Unfortunately, it seems some people on this site cannot 'hold their liquor'! If this continues and gets worse, you may have to use censorship Kory Yamashita and Dr. Caleb. We don't want this site to turn into a hate site or something worse!

You don't take offense at lifeguards at swimming pools, and no one shoudl take offense at our moderators discouraging inappropriate behaviour.
Dr Caleb @ Tue Nov 09, 2004 8:13 am

Exactally, as Jesse said. I don't consider that censorship. Everyone has the right to speak your mind; they don't have the right to be heard.

That 'Bloc are dicks' thread is gone. It wasn't going to go anywhere nice. I don't disagree with the sentiment, but it is not the way to start a civilized conversation.

I want to make it clear, judging by the acidity of posts lately, I can only see this trend continuing. Kory, myself, Susan, Christine, Milton and Bob do what we do for Vive on our own time, and Susan and Jesse do it with their own pocket money for the most part.

If a couple users are making things difficult for the moderators, we'll just ban them to make our lives easier. Don't make my life more difficult than it already is, and we'll get along just fine.

Reverend Blair @ Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:18 pm

Part of the reason I don't take part in these threads much is because I've had a few too many wars follow me around. I've always been a little shy about things coming here, so I tend to lurk and stay pretty quiet. I think Susan and Doc are pretty aware of what it starts to look like when things do follow me, although I've kept my own vitriol off of here.

Anyway, what it comes down to is that we can restrain ourselves and act like adults or we can become like so many other forums. If you really want a sample of what that's like...how childish, churlish, and nasty it can become...send me an e-mail and I'll dig up some samples for you.

It's not censorship to ask people to be respectful and mature. If I were a moderator I'd be using that ban button.

P.S. I've got lots of free time between classes, do you need another moderator?

michou @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:31 am

I don't know about the censorship part. Hatred is real (though it likes to disguise itself as 'opinionated rancour') and we've seen some fine examples of it lately. Should it be banned ?
Isn't that like trying to hide a wart or pimple on your nose ? The more you powder it the more it sticks out but if you let it alone, it dries out on its own ? Sorry if I made anybody feel queasy with my example.

Hatred and prejudices we all have to some degree. Those who express it outright and in force can only help us to look at our own and if we are mature enough, recognize it and then work at pulling out its roots, non ?
Vive Le Canada, Warts and All

Kory Yamashita @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 1:40 am

Michou, we don't mind pimples on noses. What we mind is people popping them on other people (ok NOW everyone ought to be gagging).

For example, there has been a bit of a negative reaction to all this talk of separatism lately. Other than the "bloc are dicks" thread and a few random posts, most of this has been conducted in a fairly civil manner.

We're completely open to people critisizing each others' views, but we don't want this forum to be a name-calling competition. So in that spirit, I won't hesitate to ban people who refuse to discuss in a civil manner.

Note: I said "no one wants this site to resort to censorship" in my original post. I'd like to correct myself and say that we won't resort to censorship. We'll merely kick people out for not playing by the principles of civilized discussion.

Dr Caleb @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 8:13 am

Exactally Kory. People nee dto play nice, or find somewhere else to spew their rhetoric. I will not edit someone's post (except my own), unless, as shown, they completely screw it up and it needs some HTML TLC

I will warn people, then I will ban them. Saying the moderators edit posts to censor them is just plain silly when we can remove all trace that the post, and the user ever existed.

Rev: I've seen some of the trolls that follow you I've got my own on other boards . . .

Kory Yamashita @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 6:13 pm

"Mommy... it followed me home... can I keep it?"

You guys have trolls following you? I hope you take it as a compliment. Now I'm jealous that I haven't reached such a lofty status as to have a personal entourage of trolls

Reverend Blair @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 8:08 pm

A fun thing to do is try to decipher who is what name by their spelling errors, Doc.

Trust me, Kory...you don't want to build up an entourage like that. It's not hard to build up though...all you have to do is feed them once or twice.

Mr.Can-Euro @ Wed Nov 10, 2004 9:40 pm

I hope Dr. Caleb that it isn't one of those Troll dolls from the early 90's that has somehow enlarged itself and has come to life!

You have to show them to be what you are. In a way, having trolls follow you is kind of a compliment, but after a while it just gets old.
