Story is the bike is a squirrely SOB to ride. The story is that Nicholson actually breaks one of Fonda's ribs with his knees while trying to hold on. Anyhow when it comes down to it I'd much rather have Billy's bike.......which was, along with 3 other bikes, stolen before the film was even completed.
