Oh thank the merciful heavens, the local "nationalist socialist" has an opinion on this.

Back in the day... I was cell mates with a guy who got a deuce less for his 13-14-15-16-17th DUI!!! He kept getting nailed and the judges kept letting him out on his O.R! He appealed and got it reduced to 18 mos. Did 12 and out again. He quit drinking, and is a succesfull business owner in Ab. & Sask. I still stop by from time to time for coffee with him.

I honestly wonder what it takes to have ones license suspended for the rest of your natural life. This man should never be licensed ever again and should spend considerable time in jail for this latest charge.

I'm wondering if he can be labelled a dangerous offender and locked up indefinitely?

Alcoholism is a disease, ya know, a mental illness. You can murder someone and get away with it...

Alcoholism is just as legitimate an addiction as any other drug. Being flippant about it certainly doesn't help.

I won't be flippant about it, once you get behind the wheel of a couple of tons of metal drunk (for the 17th time at least) I don't care about your addiction. You are now a danger to the public and should not be free. At the very least lock him into a rehab program and don't release him until he's "cured".

I was more "flippant" about the Canadian "justice system" than anything else.

Exactly. But you know, since any mental illness is a "getting out of jail free"-card, I won't count on it.
Alcoholism is a life long struggle. I also doubt this man still has a license. If you can drive drunk, you can certainly drive without a license.

Or you could get him liquored up and tell him that it's okay to drive drunk on an iced-over lake at break-up time.

Proculation Proculation:

How on earth does someone DUI 17 times and not have their license taken away for good?

I hate to say it but we could learn from the Yukon. They have a separate piece of ID for drinking that the cops can take away if you do anything stupid while drunk.

Next time someone DUI just take away their ability to drink for a few months. For some of these clowns it's far more important to them. :P

My guess is that he was driving without a license.

Nope. I'd like to believe he was, but unfortunately our justice system allowed this guy to drive after his 16th DUI:

$1:
The last time Larrivee was charged with DUI, in 2005, he lost his licence for five years.
