NDP Introduces Largest Corporate Slush Fund in Alberta's History

For Immediate Release June 7, 2016

CALGARY – Today the Alberta Government passed Bill 20, the Climate Leadership Implementation Act. On January 1, 2017, Alberta will have a new carbon tax in place, a tax that will increase one year later going into 2018.

“Today, the NDP Government has voted to increase the price of everything in Alberta, voted to create the largest slush fund for corporate subsidies in Alberta’s history,” said Barry McNamar, Director of the Alberta Prosperity Fund. “The NDP is increasing the cost of goods and services to Albertans, increasing the costs of our oil and gas products before they get to compete on international markets and, because the tax is applied before GST, it increases the net transfer of wealth from Alberta families to Ottawa each year.”

“We are very uncomfortable with the fact that the NDP rejected all amendments to the Bill that would have increased oversight and accountability,” said Heather Forsyth, Chair of the Board of the Alberta Prosperity Fund. “It is one thing to solicit support from big emitters who will not pay this tax but it is quite another to gain the support of everyday Albertans who tell us that their government is tone deaf to the plight of Alberta’s working families and small businesses.”

There were amendments made by the opposition parties that would have disclosed the carbon tax on customer receipts, added performance measures to test its effectiveness and to increase oversight on the use of those taxpayer funds. The Alberta Prosperity Fund is very concerned with the lack of transparency associated with a wealth transfer of more than $18 billion from Alberta families and small businesses to Alberta corporations over the next three years.

“Albertans are opposed to this tax in general, opposed to a $6 billion corporate slush fund and opposed to syphoning money meant for students, patients and senior citizens to pay for an ideological experiment.” said McNamar.

I don't agree with the way the carbon tax is structured either, but posting a press release?

That undermines your entire argument more than a Lorne Gunter editorial!
