That's great, but what about the past 100 years of burning coal to run those factories - that's a heck of a lot of carbon. Alberta too has made big investments in wind and solar (even before the NDP came along BTW), and is phasing out coal over the next decade.

But getting past all that blame and re-direction, the fact is there's still 10 million or so people in Ontario driving cars, heating/cooling their homes, and using fossil fuels in all the same ways other Canadians are.

The fact is we're all responsible, not just the oil and gas sector, which is what the rhetoric from environmentalists often sounds like.

   

They're really just trying to help us little people trapped in perpetual darkness reach the same enlightenment that they've achieved. Can't blame them for that, or their attitude that comes across the exact same way from someone who thinks they've turned into Jesus when they give a bum on the street a dollar or brought in a couple of cans of peas for the yearly food-bank drive at the office. "Look at how GOOD we are, you peasants!". Yes, look at you indeed, up their on your pedestal.

   

Well prior to Ford we were investing tons of money into thw renewable energy grid, credits for electric vehicles, expanding transit etc. etc. We were working on a lot to transform the way we do things and reduce emissions. All while conservatives and businesses lobbyists and the oil patch shrieked and screamed and tore at their clothes and tried to obstruct and discredit undermine us at every step

All I’m hearing from Thanos’s argument is that if you learn what you’ve been doing is wrong you should just stick your head in the sand and keep on doing it otherwise you’re a hypocrite or something.

   

Shut down all the automobile production lines in Ontario that produce vehicles with internal combustion engines.

   

As I mentioned, under Wynne Ontario offered a rebate for EVs even though no EVs are made in Ontario. Because it was the right thing to do.

   

Not the same. If the O&G jobs in Alberta need to be gotten rid of without hesitation in order to address climate change then the automotive and heavy manufacturing jobs in Ontario that contribute just as much to it need to be disposed of as well. Same with the airline manufacturing jobs in Quebec as air travel is also a major contributor to global warming. No sympathy for the designated damned and doomed will be tolerated.

   

But the oilsands are way dirtier and alternatives exist that are both cheaper and cleaner. Alberta is the largest GHG emitter in Canada despite the fact that your population and your economy are only about a third of the size of Ontario’s. Think about that: we have 3x the people and 2.5x the economic activity yet you’re the nation’s biggest polluter.

And this isn’t just about the oilpatch. You’re not just operating some old coal power plants you’re operating the nation’s largest fleet of coal plants that supply almost half your electricity. Meanwhile you’re pandering to the coal industry rolling back decades old mining protections etc.

Notice Ontario trends downward and Quebec is way below while Alberta is at the top and goes up and up the only province moving in the wrong direction.



After centuries of environmental destruction and the polluting practices touching every aspect of our economy and daily lives, I’m not pretending that everything has been solved in Kathleen Wynnes 2 terms in office. It will take many decades of policies to adequately address all the issues and some don’t currently have solutions. Conservatives and polluters and oil lobbyists will fight us every step of the way and every Doug Ford type in office is a setback But as they say every 1000-mile journey starts with a single step and we managed to take the first few before Ford, while Alberta continues to walk backwards.

   

We don’t have the luxury of Bruce, Darlington and Pickering- or the Hydro plant in Niagara Falls

   

If the cumulative effect of CO2 generated by Ontario automobiles and Quebec airliners were included in their total, instead of being dumped on Alberta instead of on the end-user, then the percentage generated by those two provinces would be just as high as ours. Nice trick that, eh, putting the onus on Alberta for the both the CO2 created during oil processing and then doubling it up by making us responsible as well for the CO2 further generated by gasoline and jet fuel when it gets combusted in a car or jet engine. Guess one of bigger benefits of living in the important parts of the country means you never have to say you're sorry.
