Swimmer Ryan Cochrane wins Canada’s first gold medal at Commonwealth Games

$1:
GLASGOW — Swimmer Ryan Cochrane has Canada’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games.

The Victoria native won the 400-metre freestyle event in three minutes 43.46 seconds, 0.63 seconds ahead of Australia’s David McKeon.

England’s James Guy was third in 3:44.58.

Cochrane won gold in the same event four years ago at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi to go with another gold in the 1,500 metres.

The 25-year-old won bronze in the 1,500-metre freestyle at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and improved on that performace four years later with a silver in the same event at the London Games.

He also has six medals from the world championships.

Canada has two medals on the first day of the Games after Kirsten Sweetland won silver in triathlon.

Nice!

Kirsten Sweetland has had a hard go of it. She was within meters of winning last games, and fainted just before the finish. She's had to deal with lots of broken bones and torn ligaments since, and pulled off a Silver!

It's really a shame how little coverage the networks are giving the games.....

Not enough money in it for them I guess....

It's absolutely brutal. CBC doesn't even have an event schedule on their site. It's a disgrace.

Watch today for Trap Shooting and Susan Nattrass. She was the Flag Bearer for the opening ceremonies, and first competed for Canada in the Montreal Olympics in 1976 where she placed 25th in the mens' shooting event. 8O After 6 Olympic Games, 5 Pan American Games and now 5 Commonwealth Games, she is the most decorated trap shooter ever, and one of Canada's oldest competing athletes, at 63.
