Rep. Tom DeLay said Wednesday that he will step aside as House majority leader after a Texas grand jury indicted him on a conspiracy charge.

Yet another vast left wing conspiracy?

Will Frist be next?

Yep, check out the Demorat DA (Ronnie Earle) thats doing this. he's been going after Rep's for years. Don't stick your neck out too far on this Scape you might loose it.

Rove, Frist, Brownie and now Tom DeLay? Where does it stop?

Media complicit in spreading false GOP smear of district attorney investigating DeLay

$1:
While Earle is an elected Democrat, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, a June 17 editorial in the Houston Chronicle commended his work: "During his long tenure, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle has prosecuted many more Democratic officials than Republicans. The record does not support allegations that Earle is prone to partisan witch hunts." This assertion supports Earle's own claim about his record; a March 6 article in the El Paso Times reported: "Earle says local prosecution is fundamental and points out that 11 of the 15 politicians he has prosecuted over the years were Democrats."

So much for that talking point. We should start a pool on what the next smear tactic will be.

I'm betting the GOP will say that either he:

1) Is gay
2) Supports Cindy Sheehan
3) Doesn't support the troops enough
or
4) Hates America because he's a Democrat

Any takers?

Oh, I did check him out, thanks!

"Our job is to prosecute against abuses of power, and our job is to bring those abuses to the attention of the public through juries. And that's what we do when we find a violation of the law," Earle told reporters. He said that he has prosecuted 15 elected officials during his tenure, including 12 Democrats and three Republicans."

"For years, Ronnie Earle has prosecuted big-name politicians of all stripes: Republicans, Democrats, friends. He even filed charges against himself once for missing the campaign finance reporting deadline by a day."

"When asked about comments that his investigation into DeLay's fundraising activities was politically motivated, he said: "What else are they going to say?" Earle has pointed out that he's investigated four times more Democrats than Republicans, including some friends."

"The Associated Press reported last December that Earle had prosecuted some of the biggest Democratic names in the state, including, former Texas House Speaker Gib Lewis, former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox, former State Treasurer Warren Harding and former Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Yarbrough."

(Quotes from the Washington Post)

Also:
"The grand jury's foreman, William Gibson, told The Associated Press that Earle didn't pressure members to indict DeLay. "Ronnie Earle didn't indict him. The grand jury indicted him," Gibson said in an interview at his home."

Is any grand jury in Texas likely to be all Democrats? Even majority Democrats? Or are you saying even if there were Republicans on the grand jury, they were easily bamboozled by the crafty Democrat prosecutor?

I'll admit, the prosecutor may have some ego invested in this (more narcissism than partisan politics imho), but the grand jury indicted DeLay. We'll see if DeLay can be proven guilty.

A prosecutor before a grand jury in Texas is under no obligation to present any exculpatory evidence.

"Even a modestly competent district attorney can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich." -- Former Chief Judge of the New York State's highest court, the Hon. Sol Wachtler.

Pick your jurisdiction, and you could almost guarantee it.

Hu, someone must be re-writing history again. He lost an Impeachment vote in the house of representatives, but it was never ratified in the senate.

i.e. He was impeached.

No, he lost the first round in the impeachment process. He was never forced to leave office so in fact he wasn't impeached.
