Wow, how long were they offering this service? 6 months?

Delwin @ Mon Sep 26, 2016 3:48 pm

Tough market. Digital media is a hard sell with all the access these days. They are really just "renting" the interface. And it needs to be damn good before I'll pay monthly fees for it.

Thanos @ Mon Sep 26, 2016 4:15 pm

What was Shomi charging, $4 a month like Crave is? Shows how bad the Canadian cable companies have shit the bed and are now paying the price for gouging the customers for all those years if no one wants to add less than $10 a month to their bill. The concept of Shomi and Crave is actually pretty good. Log in, select, and watch without commercials and without worrying about getting arrested as opposed to torrenting. Too bad it's being run by cable companies that simply CANNOT BE TRUSTED! 8O

I think part of it is Shomi's selection. It's not very good compared to Crave which has most of HBO's current and past catalogue. If I had a smart TV or if CRave had an app for my PS4 I'd get it.

BeaverFever @ Mon Sep 26, 2016 6:43 pm

What? People won't pay extra to watch old Seinfeld reruns on demand and binge watch Dexter only up to season 3? Shocking.

Just this summer I was given free Shomi for 2years as part of an internet package upgrade. Looked at it for 5 minimum and was like "nope!"

They don't have any of the good stuff, just a random collection of mainstream network prime time junk I don't watch anyways.

herbie @ Mon Sep 26, 2016 8:13 pm

Nothing's changed. When we got sat tv years ago they gave us 6 free pay movies as part of the sign-up deal. In the 90 days before the offer expired we could only find 3, and one of them was only because the grandkids were visiting!
Never even considered Shomi. Use my daughter's NEtflix ID once in a blue moon, like going to the old movie store, I spend 10 hours looking for something worth watching for every two hours I do spend watching something.

Netflix doesn't show it's full catalog to everyone all the time. It uses your 'preferences' runs them through an algorithm to generate your page view. Try entering these manually to search for things you might like:

Oh, jeez now I'll spend 20 hours searching....
what a mish-mosh of numbered categories, couldn't copy something like the old Dewey decimal system?
Or how about a searhc function like
monster horror thriller -teenagers -sports teams -possession -military -camp

DrCaleb @ Tue Sep 27, 2016 10:01 am

Their search system only searches titles or the 'plot' as entered in their systems. :(

It will find things like 'Burt Lancaster'' or 'war movies', or 'the longest day'. Not to good with '-teenagers' or '+kamakaze'.
