Wow, Manitoba appairently sucks, 8O (lived 1/3rd my short life there)

Nice work Alberta. Become Liberal and I might not consider moving to Ontario, :P But that's absolutely 100% impossible.

Inteesting, as you say.

I was surprised that wheat is such a small piece of the pie.

Going forward the oil sands will continue to surge. One question is will wages inflate and inflate Alberta out of competativeness in non-energy trade industries. A problem is contagion where unions would try to keep up to wage inflation caused by the energy sector.

thanks for the link, I love stats, some interesting figures, i like the ones comparing Alberta and Canada to states.

Ok but WTF? on the page titled "TaxTop Marginal Effective Personal Income Tax Rates -2006" (page 20)
Every province has a fixed 29% Federal income tax rate, which seems like the way it should be. Then the provincial % varies. But WHY does Quebec only have a 24.2% federal rate??? That is bullshit, sure they have the highest provincial % but, thats there provincial prerogative.

holy crap does NFL have a high Unemployment Rate.

I'm guessing but could it be because they operate some of their own Federal Programs such as Quebec Pension PLan??? Other Provinces don't do that. Feel free to shoot me down on this one. It came right off the top of my head. :?:

Newfoundland does have a high unemployment rate but they also get 40 weeks of poggy for 7 weeks of work or some such. EI is an income supplement rather than an unemployment scheme in the regions. So people linger on the unemployment roles. By the way there are two measures of unemployment if the labour force survey but the second is never, ever mentioned. The level of the labour force in the population varies wildly too. This is called adult participation.

I dont' know if the CPP would have anything to do with it since we pay premiums for that on top of income tax. I'd be interested to hear from someone that knows.

In my region of southern Alta you need 770 hours to qualify for poagie,if you make over $39,000 in a year after that you have to pay most back.So lots dont even apply for it. Lots of unemployed people in Alberta that you will never see on the stats. Wages have gone up the last 5 years in the energy industry but are staying fairly stable right now. Most employers are hoping for non Albertans because they will work for less and I think thats whats keeping things fairly level right now.

To get around the greed of some of the bigger unions like the operating engineers (who pretty well priced themselves out the pipeline bussiness) there is CLAC, the christian labour association of Canada. Some call it a rat union but they work for a bit less and lots of employers want them instead of the more radical unions. Still lots of people without work here and yet some energy outfits like flint are bringing in chinese workers next year.
Fly them over, fly them home, cant tell me there not going to be working for dirt wages, those flights have to cost a few bucks so cant see bringing them over unless the company was going to save some money.

From what I can gather, this is the period where that decision was made:

$1:
3) Tax Rental Agreement 1952-1957

In return for the rental of the usual taxes, the provinces could choose one of the following alternatives:

a) a 50% increase in the 1947 per capita grant, under a formula based on the increase in the population and gross national product between 1942 and 1948; plus statutory subsidies.

b) 5% of the federal personal income tax yield in the province in 1948; plus

the yield of a tax of 82% on corporation profits in the province in 1948; plus

statutory subsidies.

All the English-speaking provinces signed, including Ontario, and Quebec found itself alone in the fight for the autonomy of the provinces. The federal government granted to Quebec a 7% abatement on corporation taxes and 5% on personal income tax. However, in 1954, Maurice Duplessis introduced a provincial income tax scheme equal to 15% of the federal rate to which Ottawa responded by a l0% abatement. The Prime Minister of Canada, Louis St-Laurent, declared that the federal government would not yield any further abatements. Thus, the people of Quebec were threatened by double taxation because of federal initial inflexibility. The population of Quebec obviously supported its provincial government and, eventually, the federal government granted the full abatement

But here is a history of the tax rental agreements with respect to Quebec:

http://www2.marianopolis.edu/quebechist ... axrent.htm

Essentially it arose out of a decision by quebec to opt out of the tax rental system and is part of a desire for financial autonomy.

Hi Ziggy:

It's been reported in toronto papers that the Alberta economy is not that hot for the average person. Also the statistics canada figures for Edmonton put it at very much lower level of people working than Calgary.

Become Liberal and I'll more to Ontario...

ROTFL

I want to move to Ontario because there is not a single living Liberal in this bloody place, It's lonely.

:(

It's kinda funny, I was raised in the conservative west and so was much of my family, surrounded by Cons here, Cons there, and I spent 3 motnhs of my life in Ontario, less then any other province.

And I'm a Liberal who doesn't like the Conservative West, except for BC. (Beautiful place)

You live in Med Hat right?

Makes sense.....

Yep. Perfect sense, :P

Don't worry, I hold ZERO pride in my town.

Though, I'm getting an increasing amount in Alberta......

..........

They are brainwashing me!

Someone! HELP ME,

Naw, I even had some pride in Manitoba... Fucking icecube of a province, ;) I used to live in Brandon and still cheer for the Wheatkings in the WHL (SCREW the Medicine Hat Tigers!).

To the tune of 'Toronto Sucks':

'Medicine Hat Sucks'

I hate the Tee Pee and the Leisure Centre too
I hate Medicine Hat High School and the town is too blue (Conservative)
The rents too high, the airs unclean (smells like COW SHIT)
The town roads are dirty and the people are mean
And the women are rude and the men are dumb
And the children are loopy cause they live in a slum
The bylaws suck like the outside burning fee (dumbass bylaw)
They smell real bad and they think they're Calgary (Pronounced 'Cal-Gree')
In Medicine Hat, Alberta
