Hah, got you there didnt i? That was just cruel. XD

Okay, i got just a few questions about moving to Alberta.. i mean im gonna be there in about 3 months so its getting closer!

1 - Is the drinking age in Alberta 19?

2 - From what i can gather, dont i have to take a written [theory] test, take a practical test, then im allowed to drive a car/truck on the road as long as i have someone in the car whos had a license for what...2 years? Then i have to take another practical test and if i pass that i've passed and i get my license?

3 - Whats car insurance like for a 19 year old first time driver? Over here young drivers get done up the ass for insurance. :o

I know drinking age is 18.. car insurance is privatised there so shop around.. and will depend on the car you drive. the test i'm not sure i'm from BC

Rules To Enter Alberta

1. Pull your damned droopy pants up. You look like an idiot.

2. Let's get this straight; it's called a "gravel road." I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you're going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.

3. They are cattle & oil wells. That's what they smell like to you. They smell like money to us. Get over it. Don't like it? #1 and #16 go east and west, #6 and #2 go north and south, Pick one.

4. So you have a $60,000 car. We're impressed. We have $250,000 combines that are driven only 3 weeks a year.

5. So every person in every pickup waves. It's called being friendly. Try to understand the concept.

6. If that cell phone rings while a bunch of ducks are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don't have it up to your ear at the time.

7. Yeah, we eat Beef and bison. You really want sushi & caviar? It's available at the corner bait shop.

8. The "Opener" refers to the first day of deer season. It's a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November.

9. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age.

10. No, there's no "vegetarian special" on the menu. Order steak. Or you can order the Chef's Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham & turkey.

11. When we fill out a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables, and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and Barbeque Sauce.

12. You bring "coke" into my house, it better be brown, wet, and served over ice.

You bring "Mary Jane" into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair.

13. Curling and hockey is as important here as the Lakers and the Knicks,
and a dang site more fun to watch.

14 . Yeah, we have golf courses. But don't hit the water hazards - it spooks the fish.

15. Colleges? Try our U of A. They come outta there with an education plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at passing pickups when they come for the holidays.

Drinking age in alberta is 18... 19 in BC. If your in bars as for a bartender screw up... It's rum and orange juice .. rather than vodka and orange.. usually served in a picher with 2 straws..(Ezzy's Red Deer) On the drivers side I believe you take a written drivers test and a practical test as well I am not sure how long you are a "Learner for" or how long your new driver status is for. In BC learners I think is 6 mos to 1 year and you New driver status last for 2 years... If I am wrong sorry maybe someone else can shed some light. Car insurance is cheaper but I would check with the Alberta Automible Association.. they could give you all the up to date stuff...

What kind of car is it?

1) The drinking age is 18...but lots of 16 yr old still get drunk, go figure. :)

2) To get a license, you can take a course ($350 or more) with Alberta Motor Assocation or any of about a thousand driver's ed schools, usually run by some old guy with a 10 year old car. Or you can show up, take a written test to get your learner's permit (Class 7), then come back later and take the road test to get your Class 5. you'll need to buy a test permit and schedule your test ahead of time. If you pass, you get the license. If you already have a regular license in your province, you might just be able to swap it over, although you might get a probationary license. Check out this website;

http://www3.gov.ab.ca/gs/services/mv/operator.cfm

3) They recently tried to equalize rates throughout the province with a big rollback. I know first time drivers (age is somewhat irrelevant) used to get screwed. After returning from overseas, because I hadn't driven in Canada in 5 years, they considered me a 'new driver' (despite a clean record for 4 years before I left and having had a license for 10 years longer than that). The biggest factor is your car. A new driver with a Mustang will pay way more than someone with an Echo hatchback, especially if you owe money on it and need full collision insurance. Shop around. Some of the best from my experience are Seabury and Smith, Meloche Monnex, and maybe Co-op, but my advice is to call as many as you can to get the best rate. Try and get put as a secondary driver under your parents if possible or see if you qualify for a group rate (university, your job, etc). My insurance rate was cut by 2/3 because I was a grad of the UofA.

Good luck and hope you enjoy it out here!

Just wondering......are you coming to work or go to school? The work availability in Alberta and Edmonton in particular is just insane.
http://working.canada.com/edmonton/index.html
That website gathers together job ads from multiple sources and if you surf the site you will come across other useful links.
Yesterday I did a search for"posted in last 24 hours, 15 KM radius of Edmonton". 499 hits. The transit system is decent and cars are cheap to buy. Like the other posts, insurance is a matter of shopping around. Definitely start under your parents if this is possible. If you are employed getting monthly payments for insurance is not difficult.
Also........in Edmonton it's "CALGARY SUCKS!!!!!!"
in Calgary it's "EDMONTON SUCKS!!!"

Do not under any circumstances get confused about this. Many wanna-be cowboys with tremendous belt buckles will beat you senseless.
It's ok to be unknowledgeable about hockey. Admit this as early as possible then loudly proclaim " But it's a fine looking sport. Do tell me more" Say"aahhhh, Gretzky, him i've seen film of. Amazing, really" With a British accent this will get you out of almost anything.

There is a lot of money out in the oilpatch. But a whole bunch more after several years of university. The mountains are an easy weekend excursion from the major cities and party buses to skiing are popular with young people and cheap. Banff in the winter is a whole bunch of fun.
Hope you have a good experience when you get here. I've done ok so far and I'm from Ontario. (the despised "down east" in Albertan parlance)

One last thing.......we serve our beer cold. The colder the better. I'd get used to that if I was you.
Good Luck!!
