bootlegga bootlegga:

And I assume your talking about Keray Henke (Education) - but based on his profile on the government website, he sounds very qualified - having worked for the AB government for over 30 years;

Yeah, he's only got a Masters in PA and is the Chair of an OECD Education Policy Committee...yeah I agree, he's hardly qualified at all... :wink:

I don't think 30 years experience in government, regardless of department or educational background, makes you "very qualified" to aid in making Provincial-wide educational decisions.

I'd much rather take a former teacher or Principal and get them into that type of role. People who actually have been on the ground and have real-World experience in their respective fields.

You mentioned that these people were "highly skilled" in their fields and that's where I think you're wrong. I think they're highly skilled in government administration, but not in the respective portfolios they currently manage.

"Government Administration" is their field, so they are quailfied in it. 'People on the ground' are the ones who do the work, the managers are the ones who organize all the things that need to come together to get the work done. Everyone who has worked in government know that the DMs are the ones in 'charge', the Ministers will come and go, but the Deputy Ministers and ADMs stay and know the 'business'.

The 'people on the ground' usually don't have the foggiest idea about how to manage people. They know their jobs, and probabally know it well. When they learn how to be good managers, someone suck them into becoming Directors. Those are the people who shield the people trying to do their jobs from the management bullshit like audits and planning meetings that need to get done, but don't affect the front line.

Fair enough, he might not know much about teaching fourth graders math or social studies, but I certainly think his qualifications are a close second when it comes to running a government ministry.
