My friend told me that the city of Calgary in Alberta will become the third largest city in near future. But I dont agree with this saying 'cause this city has longer period of cold days than warm days in a year though it is really a beautiful city. I am afraid of its coldest temperature in winter. How do you think about it?

It has Chinooks which makes it warmer than most prairie cities.

Calgary is less than half the size of Vancouver and is also smaller than Ottawa, so it'll be a very long time before it ever becomes the nation's third largest city, if in fact it ever does....

I thought ottawa has a pop. of 500 000 people, not just under or over a million.

Calgary's population give or take a hundred thousand, is 1 million and is the fourth largest in Canada so it could happen.

According to NationMaster.com Calgary allready is the third largest city. Let's not forget that Vancouver's population is only about 500k, it's only the metropolitan population that brings it over 1 million.

Ottawa's pop. is just under 1.2 million (metro area), if memory serves me. Calgary is booming and could surpass Ottawa in size in maybe ten years, possibly even sooner, but it would still take decades for Calgary to become larger than Vancouver.

The only way Calgary becomes Canada's third largest city in our lifetimes is if Quebec separates and takes Montreal with it....

The tricky part in all this is are we talking about the cities alone or are we including their suburbs as well? If we're talking about metropolitan areas then Calgary is nowhere near Vancouver in size.

yes big dirrence between city and an urban area or greater area.

Yes that is tricky but suburbs are part of the city is it not? For example the Bronx and Queens in New York etc.. I always thought so.

Would it not be simpler to just turn it into one mega city like Toronto or would that be more harmful than beneficial?

GVRD reaches all the way out to Aldergrove. What is the population of Calgary's equivalency?
