There is a new section on CKA, its called Canuck Tube!

www.canadaka.net/video

Canuck tube is a community based collection of Canadian video clips from video sharing sites YouTube and Google Video.

I got the idea when I made the CKA Youtube group, and was disapointed that categories could not be made, so I decided to make my own mirror of YouTube for Canadian content.

CanuckTube does not post or host the videos, the videos are still loaded from Youtube, but the videos are displayed here on CKA along with vvarious video details that I retreive using the youtube API.

I also track my own stats on videos, so the amount of views, rating and comments are also done localy.

Commenting is done through the forums like the CKA News links, when you make a comment on a video, its making a forum post automaticaly in the background.

It is super easy and fast to submit videos to CanuckTube, in the top right of the section is a "submit video" button. You simply choose a category and paste the youtube link. You can enter in a custom title if you wish, if the title field is left empty, the youtube video title will be used.

I still have some work to do, there is no video rating yet and no support for google videos yet. So hold off on submitting Google video links.

But please fel free to start submitting youtube video links! Remmber this is for Canadian videos only.

**top** if you are viewing a video category and you press the "add video" button, the current category will be auto selected for you!

Comments and suggestions are welcome! I just made this up on the fly the last 2 days, so it might grow with feautes as people start to use it and I think of more things.

Oh and you get 1 point when you submit a video, but the cka points are like who's line is it anywhere points, lol

Check out Canuck Tube

Good idea!

for some reason I stayed up all night finding videos to add, lol

If anyone has suggestions for new categories or sub-cateogires, let me know!

I also need to add sorting options and a search

hmm I forgot about Metacafe, I can probably figure out a way to do it.
But not sure if they have an API like youtube for getting the video details.

"Canadian Entertainment" category? what would go in there, that wouln't go under music or humour?

Come on no submissions all day?

I have only scratched the surface of Canadian video on youtube!

For example, I just added 50 SCTV videos, some scenic video and a couple hockey clips.

**update**
I have added a link to view "Newest Videos", will list all videos from all categories in order of newest to oldest.

Search is also working, there is a search on the CanuckTube index, or at the bottom of every category page. The search at the bottom of the category pages searches only in the current category.

I have added support for adding Google video and Metacafe videos, but Youtube is still HIGHLY prefered!

Google and metacafe don't have an API to retrieve the details and thumbnail for each video, so it kinda sucks.

Google and metacafe videos won't have a thumnail, unless I can figure out some sneaky way of grabbing one without an API. Hopefully google will eventual release an API for there videos, since they have API's for most other google services.

I added the ability to add direct links to video files.
So if you have the URL directly to a .wmv .avi or .mpg you can submit that link and choose "Direct Windows Media Link" as the source.

But these links will have no video info or video thumbnail :( so youtube is still prefered. I can now add custom descriptions.

for an example I added this JTF2 Video:

wow, Youtube really is going to shit after Google took them over. They are taking down so many videos. I'm going to have to do a major clean up of the CanuckTube now, for exmaple all the Vignettes are gone: http://www.canadaka.net/modules.php?nam ... t&catid=16
too bad. i spent a fair amount of time finding all those and much more.

*UPDATE*

I have removed most of the broken videos, the dead youtube links. Which sucks lost some great videos, I found some of the daily show clips from the comedy central site in WMV.

I added 2 new sources you can add videos from, metacafe or any video from any site that has "embed" code.

There was a problem with the submit form the last while, so its fixed now and has a description field added, for non YouTube videos.

Canadaka @ Wed Feb 07, 2007 5:25 pm

I hanv't really added any from metacafe yet, so you may be the test victom ;)

Canadaka @ Wed Feb 07, 2007 6:22 pm

well thats the negative part about "linking" embeding these videos anr not having them on the server here. If i had them on my server I could generate thumbnails, but hosting all those videos would take much bandwidth, but more important I don't want the legal troubles.

Youtube offers an API interface to fetch the video details including the thumbnail from them. I don't know if metacafe does... I will check.

A new site i found, livevideo.com seems to have an API of sorts.

I might add an option to enter the file or url to the thumbail manualy to Canucktube.

Canadaka @ Wed May 23, 2007 3:38 pm

small update, I found a way to show thumbnails for videos submitted from Metacafe.

Example: http://www.canadaka.net/modules.php?nam ... erm=labatt

Is there something going with the Video Section, or is this a problem with YouTube. All the videos do not show up when they use to, but it shows that videos are in that section by how many they are. The date is September 26th, 2007 and the time is 12:39 PM.
