I decided to try out adding a new area to the top of the forum index, "Current Hot Topics".

It shows the 10 most active topics from the last 5 days. I might change the timeframe and possible the way I calculate, "whats hot" Right not i'm simply using (topic_views * topic_replies).

It also only checks for topics from certain forums, like most the political forums, current events and such. Or else the "forum game" topics might dominate the list ;)

Lemme know what you think.

I don't really like it... sorry. I prefer just using the recent topic scroll.

Very interesting option! I like the idea. The recent topic is good as well. It will be interesting to see what gets more use.

Actually, now that you've changed the format, it looks much better.

Is it possible for you to make it an optional feature? I find I won't be using it often personally... :( Sorry.

Interesting.

the recent topics list is still there, and if you want to keep on top of new posts, its better to bookmark the dedicated Recent topics page:
http://www.canadaka.net/modules.php?nam ... nce_scroll
Rather than loading the forum index.

I could make the new "Hot Topics" an option in your forum profile to enable/disable.

It doesn't really slowdown the page, its only 1 query and a fast one.

This new feature is more for people that don't check the forum as often. For those of us that are here multiple times a day, it won't be of much use.. It will stay a fairly static list all day.

But for people that maybe check the forums every day or so, it might be useful. Same for newcomers.

It's growing on me. But what constitutes a "hot topic"? Posts or views?

I mentioned this in my first post, "topic_views * topic_replies" ;)
But i might find a better way of determining "hotness".

I see a problem. The forum game thread will come to dominate the current hot topics.

They don't show up if you turn the forum games off in the 'customize' list.

I agree that this should be an option that can be turned off.... it's not really doing it for me.

canucker @ Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:39 am

They don't show up even if you haven't turned off the forum games. At least not that I've seen so far...

lol, I guess people don't actualy read my posts. I said in my first post that only a select few forums are searched for "Hot Topics"

And for the "Recent Topics" list, you can indeed "customize" it to filter out forums your not interested in.

Later today, I will make an option in your profile to disable the "Hot Topics". But it must be better than the banner advertisement that used to be there :P

I would like to see a menu for your last ten topics that you have posted to as a pop up.

hmm this could be done.. but for what purpose? Care to explain?

There is actualy a way to produce a list like this using the search:
http://www.canadaka.net/modules.php?nam ... thor=Scape

Also there will by a list like you are asking on the new profile pages, that i'm almost done making.
