Winston Churchill, upon hearing of Leonard Birchall's heroics in spotting and relaying information to the British of a Japanese task force heading for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), dubbed him the Saviour of Ceylon. The result of his heroism was his plane being shot down over the Indian Ocean and his capture by the Japanese.
