With the forum growing some of us don't have the time to check all the topics since there are becoming more and more of them.

So to help this and for another neat addition to the forum I have implimented a topic/post rating system.

Users rate individual posts to produce overall ranks for posts, topics and users.

Users can rate each post individually, by selecting from a range of "rating options", each of which carries a certain point value. The overall rating for each post is calculated by totalling (or averaging) all the individual rating points for that post, and assigning a rank from the "Totals table". Overall ratings for topics and users are also derived in this way (i.e. all ratings of posts in a particular topic / by a particular user).

there are sooo many options with thi, so will take awhile to find what works best, so just start using it for now. Rate topics and post that are of good, then you will see the blue starts beside the topic name and posts. So if you are low on time, can start of by checking the topics with high ratings.

Is this like the slashdot Karma system? I rather liked that.

yah kinda I guess.

A lot of forums have topic rating, but this also allows post rating and users rating, plus has a gillion options.

Scorpio @ Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:42 am

so what does it mean if you get a high rating yourself?

Canadaka @ Mon Nov 14, 2005 3:43 am

well actualy the rating of users doens't work yet, but will be able to rate users. so how good a poster they are.

But primarly and right now its for rating topics and posts.

The karma thing was fun on another site until it was getting too clicky... I'm not sure about this yet, I guess I'll just have to try it out and see.

(Was testing it out on yours Scape)

here are some of the options I can set:

Rate first post only: Only allow first post in each topic to be rated
Min. post count: Number of posts a user must make before being able to rate
Min. days registered: Days that must elapse after user registers before being able to rate
Weighting method: If activated, a user can only select from those rating options where their own count (e.g. post count) equals or exceeds the figure in the "weighting threshold" column (see table below)
Max daily ratings: Limit total number ratings a user can make in any 24 hour period
Max daily ratings per user: Limit number of times that a user can rate posts by the same poster in any 24 hour period
Allow users to hide name: Allow user to appear as anonymous in list of who rated a post
Overall rating method: Whether rating totals are based on sum or average of all individual rating points

and I take back what I said about rating users, i think i was wrong, doens't do that. But going to have a link on users profile page to display posts they have rated. Not working properly righ tnow though.

Just loads this page http://www.canadaka.net/modules.php?nam ... le=ratings
which lists all posts that have been rated.

These are good ideas IMO.

I had some reservations about users being able to rate other users; it looked like it could be used to hurt people. But if, in fact, that is not a part of the system then all the other elements look good to me.

I would definitely set some limit on how many posts a user can rate in a given day (say, maybe five or so), otherwise an orgy of ratings would render the system meaningless.

just remind people that they can rate threads.

Streaker @ Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:26 am

I must have missed something. Can't see how to rate threads... [?]

Blue_Nose @ Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:29 am

I've been using it quite a bit... I seem to be the only one who doesn't do it anonymously, though. It's definately better than just posting "good post" or whatever.

It's right under the translate buttons on the right, Streaker

Streaker @ Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:34 am

LOL Yeah I've been rating posts anonymously but I had the impression that Trev meant that threads could be rated as well...

Blue_Nose @ Thu Mar 16, 2006 6:44 am

Oh yeah, I misunderstood that PDT_Armataz_01_05

The threads are automatically rated by the posts rates, I think... this thread is getting a pretty good rating

I think we should have something that keeps track of the number of good ratings people get... since there's no bad ratings, it should be fine.

OK that all makes sense now. Guess we're both a little dopey this morning...
