(moncton,n.b.)MEMORIES OF OLD GUNNINGVILLE BRIDGE 1917-2006

Here's a bit of history of this small bridge,

Gunningsville Bridge was completed on Jan. 27, 1917 and it is the fourth to occupy the space. Three others had been there between 1867 and 1915. First bridge (1864/67 to 1969) was damaged severly by the Saxby Gale in 1869. Second bridge (1873-1891) was being repaired when a storm destroyed three spans of it.

The Bridge has a long history of accidents. In 1929, a scow named the Mayflower was blown out of control on the then flowing Petitcodiac River by Moncton's famous tidal bore and crashed into the bridge. The cargo of lumber was lost and two men drowned.

In recent years, trucks, trailers and buses were banned from using the current bridge as the bridge was built for horse carriages and wasn't wide enough to be truly safe for today's cars. . An infinite number of people smashed their side car mirrors against the bridge's pillars... coincidentally my boss lost his side mirror of his mini van on the very last day it was open.( at least he has a historic keepsake).

As a former resident of eastern New brunswick, I remember the times travelling this bridge, especially when I got my licence and made my first trip to Moncton.

My father decided to let me drive on that bridge, and was a little nervous because it was so narrow, unlike the bridge at Shediac Bridge which goes one way.

I can see why they are replacing that bridge, with all the people coming from Riverview, Hilsborough and other areas of Southern N.B.

Just as long as it does not spoil the natural scene of that "chocolate" river!

Why is that river so brown????

It is part of the area. You are near PEI and the "Bright Red Mud" which it is famous for.

The mineral content there is high, especially with the tide from the Bay of Fundy coming in and out every day!!

http://www.petitcodiac.org/riverkeeper/ ... st2005.htm Chignecto Bay and Minas Basin form two arms at the head of the Bay, fed respectively by the Peticodiac River and the Salmon River. At high tide, the extraordinary volume of water in the Bay floods into the rivers. As the river banks narrow, the compressing waters rise in a spectacular surge and a visible standing wave, sometimes lm (3 ft) in height, as the maelstrom of roaring, churning water races upstream at speeds close to 15 km per hour (10 mph). Witnesses have likened the sound to that of an approaching railway train, and first-time viewers are usually struck with awe and fear (Thurston, 1994).

woah!!! If you look all zoomed in it is all brown then if you zoom out a bunch I guess it is a really old pic because everything is green and bright blue river!

its brown up to the causeway then blue from that point on.the causeway blocks the river completely.the brown is silt washed up by the tidal bore, the river used to wash it back to the bay of fundy but when they built the causeway they blocked the natural flow so that is why you see the brown mess.the tidal bore was amazing before the causeway was built.

Look at the pic though, it goes in a perfect ly straight line across the land, there is something not normal there.

That is a function of how google map works. When you get to the part where the land goes green and the river blue, a different sat system was used and the level of detail is much less. There is something similar through out the google map for where ever the resolution changes to a much lower one.

You can also see this effect when the pics used were taken during different seasons. You can see it here with the exactly half frozen lakes :)
Difference
