"I agree QBC I have owned guns my whole life enjoy hunting and have never commited a crime."
Pleeeeeeeze, stop feeling guilty and stop letting the socialist left media and societal forces beat you down...you are simply exercising the right of all free men in supposedly free countries, to defend yourselves against the forces of evil...armed you're a subject, disarmed you're a slave-very simple concept........you're reminding me of a Russian woman who said "only criminals and police have guns"....well yes, in her communist (leaning) country thats true {showed me some pics of her with some commies in a "return to communism" themed parade in Moscow, so I'm not surprised.}

I am a supporter of My SECOND AMMENDMENT RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS!

We are Canadian. We get sunburnt if we bear our arms.

It's a different culture here. I've been to a couple gatherings at co-workers houses where, after a few drinks, people start comparing pistols. Handguns just show up on the table, counter, bar and are passed around like nothing.

Can't say I've ever witnessed anything like that in Canada. And I grew up in very rural SK where everybody has firearms. There are three rifles and one shotgun at Dads farm (for example) and they are the same guns that have been there as long as I've been alive.

One of the employees on our shop floor shot himself dead by accident a couple months ago. Kids, relatives in the house and everything. He was sitting at the kitchen table with family, took the clip out of his gun and proceeded to mess around with it. Shot himself in the head with the bullet in the chamber. Didn't even make the local news.

I think for some people here, your arsenal is almost like a status symbol or something. People talk about their guns, they show you their collection when you visit (you don't have to ask). This isn't everybody, but it seems to be most of the folks I work with (who are local).

Comparing US and Canadian gun laws is like comparing apples and oranges.

This might be an over-generalization, but a large proportion of guns in Canada are located in the West and belong to rural people, farmers, hunters, etc. Sure there are plenty of urban gun owners, but most of them like hunting or shooting or something like that.

Even before the gun registry, it was harder in Canada to buy a gun than in the US. Here you have to take a firearms course, do a police security check and so on before you can get a license that allows you to buy regular guns, not pistols or military style weapons. High capacity magazines were banned after Marc Lepine walked around Ecole Polytechnic (sp?) over decade ago. If you want to buy a pistol you have to jump through more hoops and get another permit.

Compare that to the US where in some states you can go to a gun show and buy a gun right away. Some states allow you to carry concelaed weapons if you have the right permit(s). You can walk into a Wal-Mart and buy either an M-16 or a AK-47 (well the Chinese copy anyways - Type 56?). You can also buy all sorts of ammunition in the US that is illegal in Canada.

When I taught in Taiwan, I met a girl from Atlanta GA. When she got old enough to drive, her dad bought her a pistol and a cell phone. He told her if she ever broke down to call 911 and wait for the cops. If ANYONE stopped to help her, she was to shoot them!

Another example of the US. I was pulled over (for a burnt out taillight) by a state trooper in New Mexico and he advanced on my car with his gun already drawn, because he had never seen an Alberta license plate and thought it was fake. I don't know about you, but both of those things are downright scary.

Personally, I don't think Joe Six-pack needs an Ak-47 or M-16, but there is nothing wrong with owning a high power hunting rifle or even a pistol. In the past I have owned a .22 semi-auto hunting rifle and before that, an AR-7 survival rifle.

Responsible gun ownership is all any place needs. I think the system we have in Canada is as close to perfect is as any we could have. Those who want to get guns can and the most dangerous types are limited to the police, military and criminals (who should get mandatory 20 year sentences for illiegal weapons use IMHO).

“he advanced on my car with his gun already drawn” ….Well, that’s surprising and up here in Seattle, he’d be unemployed right now, but “the South” is a totally different world…you can thank the drug runners and mexican illegals for his behaviour…cops get nailed all the time down there and I believe the South has the highest death rate for law enforcement, last time I checked the FBI stats…

“Personally, I don't think Joe Six-pack needs an Ak-47 or M-16, but there is nothing wrong with owning a high power hunting rifle or even a pistol. In the past I have owned a .22 semi-auto hunting rifle and before that, an AR-7 survival rifle.”
I have both, and they’re secured in a safe…believe me, if Canadian anti-gun groups could take your .22 semi/ar7, they would not so much as hesitate….a group in England, representing family members murdered by knife, have proposed a “length limit” on all knives in the UK, and a total ban on butcher knives…I don’t know about anyone else, but the only knife I consistently use from the set holder is the butcher knife…There is no end to this mental illness---until we can live together in trust, which means ENFORCING criminal law, we will always have this hanging over our heads. As an actor in a james bond flick said, “take ‘em out an’ waste ‘em”…my tax dollars are paying for 23 hour a day lockdown criminals who get an hour of fresh air, escorted in chains by 2 or 3 guards…this is stupid, I’m sure that guy doesn’t want to live like that, but has no opportunity for suicide.

You can walk into a Wal-Mart and buy either an M-16 or a AK-47 I wish that was true, I woulda bought all of mine there at a wal-mart price…but no, they are as P.C. about gun sales as they are (or were) about their music sales (no low-end heavy metal or rap)…wal mart just sells hunting guns, and a few clip fed .22’s…

“Here you have to take a firearms course” Yes, that’s a good thing that we don’t have here—I took a hunter’s safety course early on, but so many haven’t…the proliferation of ND (negligent discharge) is the single best reason to require it…if you always check and recheck chamber, you’ll never have trouble…it’s so easy to do with single action pistols and clip fed rifles…BE SAFE ;o) http://www.thehomegunsmith.com/
