Cold weather does kill pine beetles. It either has to be a real early season unexpected cold snap, kills the bugs before their bodies start producing the antifreeze, or a good two week shot of -40 ish weather. Now, we don't seem to ever get that type of cold anymore and it could indeed be global warming. No one has shown me a reason for the mild winters that makes any sense besides the warming climate, so I guess it's more than likely that.

With the combination of the mild winters we've had over the last decade or so, the simple fact that the all knowing tree huggers went nuts when the bug was discovered in Tweedsmuir Park a decade or so ago, we could have been stopped right there with aggressive logging. People talk about the clear cut N East of Quesnel that can be seen from space with the naked eye, that was the Fir beetle. They went in, cut like crazy in and around the infestation and stopped it cold. If they had done that in Tweedsmuir Park, the entire Province of BC's pine forests wouldn't be dead or dieing now. It's now moving into Alberta and will kill their Pine forests as well. One big clear cut in that half of which would have been in Tweedsmuir Park would have stopped this and we wouldn't be looking at the economic and ecological disaster for northern BC we're facing now. Not to mention the extreme forest fire risk we face every summer now with thousands of acres of tinder dry dead pine forests set and ready to fuel it.

We need a small miracle for the Pine Beetles to be killed off. We need 35 below or colder for three weeks (or is two) before we can kill them off.

It's not cold enough, yet. I'd love to see the end of it. It's so bad now,it's hard to find decent pine at all. ON a good note, we have lots of firewood for my stove with no guilt!

Not that it's a great thing, but that's at least one plus we've found. :?

Those damn environmentalists! I hope they realize the damage they did, with their theoretical bullshit.
