I have really been enjoying the Olympics so far, the city is so alive. This thread is for anyone that lives or is visiting the city to report on how venues or events they goto.
So far I've done the following.
Thursday we went out to see the torch relay at the LiveCity Yaletown. We got there 1.5 hours early, but not EARLY earnly enough to get into the park. But we got a good spot up the street and I got to high five Michael Buble while he was running with the torch.
Friday I saw the torch again near my home when it went through China town. I had a some friends over to watch the opening ceremonies. Soon as Gretzky light the flame, we headed out into the streets. And it was the craziest I've ever seen the streets of Vancouver. So many Canadian flags all over, massing on granville and robson streets. Constant chanting of CAN-AH-DAH, or GO CANADA GO. We stayed out until 1:30am walking around and watched the laser/fireworks and fire show, then watched a free concert from a band called "The Left".
Saturday we did a photo scavenger hunt with about 18 friends. We split into 3 groups and had a large list of items to find, it was a lot of fun. And forced us to confront and athlete or foreigner we could find for photos. We didn't go into the pavilions or attractions, the lines have been INSANE!!! There is even a 2 block line to get into the Olympic clothing store in The Bay.
Sunday was a beautiful day, a friend came into the city and we walked around the city again, there was lots of great street entertainers out in the sun.
Monday we tried and failed to goto the free Sloan concert at the Atlantic Canada House. Had a friend holding a spot in line 3 hours ahead of opening and still no good. The line was long and was hundreds of meters behind us even. Why would they book a popular act for a venue that only holds like 150 ppl! But had fun going to a bar instead.
I'm probably not going to do anything tomorrow night.
Wednesday we are taking a day off work to try and visit a bunch of the pavilions. In hopes they won't be as busy on a weekday. BUT first I'm probably going to wake up early and try and line up to the free live filming of the COLBERT REPORT at the park beside Science World.
Thursday I'm still deciding if I'm going to go to see Our Lady Peace at the Richmond OZONE.
Friday were going to see Sam Roberts at the Holland Park.
Saturday I plan on going to the Ontario house extra early for the "Special guest" who I'm hoping MIGHT be The Tragically Hip! might try and goto the German or Irish beer tents otherwise.
No specific plans for the 2nd week yet, but if Canada is doing good in mens hockey its going to be awesome. If they make it to the gold medal game and win, it will be absolute chaos! I'm not going on a ski trip that weekend just in case, I'm not missing that!
Mrs. Bart and I have booked a trip to Victoria at the end of May and we're planning on being in Van for Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of June before heading home. I'm curious if there are any recommendations for a decent enough place to stay in Van (like around CDN$80-$120 per night) and then I'm also wondering if the Richmond Oval will be open to the public when we visit? I know I'd LOVE to take a turn on the oval and so would Mrs. Bart.
I don't stay at hotels in Vancouver since I live here, so I don't really have recommendations. I'm also not sure about the Richmond oval, I think it will probably be open to the public by then. We went last winter when it was open to the public for the free skating night, it was fun.
I went to the Live Colbert Report filming in Vancouver today! A friend was lined up before 6am, and there was already a line, we joined him at 7:30am. At about 9:15 the line was crazy long and wide, not really a line anymore, so they just opened it up to a mad dash to the stage. We managed to get a good spot about 10ft from he front.
It was an absolutely beautiful day, was fun to see Stephen Colbert and the live filming of a show. He even apologized for saying all the negative things about Canada at the end.
Good to see we have one of our best men on the job.
I just got back from the free Our Lady Peace concert at the Richmond Ozone, it was awesome! Huge packed crowd, was super dense to wiggle my way to the front, but once the crowd surfing started it was much easier, then the moshpits. Good times!
And this is friggin awesomer, If i knew this was happening, I would have ran to get my stick.
random street hockey on granville street!
Went and saw 3 bands at the Aboriginal pavilion tonight. One from the Yuokon, another was a crazy electronically modified didery-doo guy. Then stumbled apon robson square for the fireworks and a live performance from "Said the Whale"! I didn't know they were playing there tonight, so was an awesome surprise, i love them. They really god the crowd going.
Robson and granville were packed as usual, probably more so because its a friday. You will never see more Canada flags, Canda chants, and constant spuratic outbursts of people singing OH Canada on mass.
There is a huge line to get into the downtown Bay Olympic store. The demand was so high the store is open 24hrs on the weekends. 2am and there is still a line to get in the store!
here are a bunch of pics from the last week and a short video of some clips i took with my crappy video on my camera.
Just had one of the craziest and fun nights doing the Canadian olympic themed decentralized dance party all through downtown. My feet are dead after dancing with rollor blades on in moshpits of people for 4 1/2 hours. There was awsome 80's music, OH Canada's and GO Canada chants. Woman showing their breasts, crazy costumes, mass dance party in a pool and everyone getting soaked from the rain.
Pics and video to come.
