Charest pushes Canada-EU free trade

DAVOS, Switzerland — Quebec Premier Jean Charest is pushing for a free-trade deal between Canada and the European Union that he says could level the playing field with emerging markets.
Mr. Charest said Friday that such an accord would allow Canada to tap the European market of 450 million consumers.
He has already pitched the idea to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his provincial counterparts and says he has received a favourable reaction. Mr. Charest said Mr. Harper was “very enthusiastic.”
He said a free-trade accord would help overcome obstacles to investment and stimulate the trade in goods and services. It would exclude agriculture.

I think it's a great idea ! I'm always in favor of free trade. Even for the left, they can say it's a good think since it would reduce our dependence with the U.S.

This would be a good way to go, I would love to see an Atlancit Free Trade Agreement. Perhaps when the AU get more developed they can sign on.
I think we should also look at the markets of India and China, but the worst trade barriers for Canadians are the ones between provinces.

Free trade does nothing for the average person but turn their career into a punch clock livelihood at an income level which plays to the tune of other economys and small business being the most vulnerable . Someone who thinks their little vitamin health food store with online access is going to prosper is going to take an ass whipping on a global level and that includes every small business . Free trade is not just about removing tarriffs .
What we have here is a few resources that other countries may need but in every other area probably including science and technology the combined world can do circles around any of you just as though you were standing still or sit down ...so to speak . I'm not trying to discourage confidence or say we /you shouldn't try ... just bringing a little reality to the situation .
Agriculture will be the superb winner in free trade with Europe and also likely lumber export , some large industry could get hurt like existing automotive and american automotive but the measure will create competition for the US trade with Canada so the US will be getting a wake up call in how crappy their arrogant corporate america treats Canada ...so it may not be all bad . One has to read the fine print to really know its pros and cons .

Sure , but sorry for sounding so concentrated on one issue . What do we do with our AG issue . With or without free trade the US is no place to limit our Agriculture free trade since it already exists . MESSAGE TO THE FLORIDA > How's about free orange juice for say ten years for Katrina likely the money was used to fund the Iraq invasion and the coming up Iran invasion.

Canada and the EU have differnt health systems Canada's is (allegedly) more science based while EU's is based on public opinion. This change would do more to help Canadaian ag get inthe EU then anything elese, but I don't think it's worthwile market. Asia is a good market but I think the US will remain a large export market for some time to come because of convinience.

There is a lot of money in having a resource ecconomy, we may work on developing industry but science and technology does not refflect the manufacturing industry of a developed country as technology developed in Canada could be used for goods manufactured in the US, India, China or elesewhere.
