None of the world’s top industries would be profitable if they paid for the natural capital they use
$1:
A sobering new study finds that the world's biggest industries burn through $7.3 trillion worth of free natural capital a year. And it's the only reason they turn a profit. That amounts to an global industrial system built on sleight of hand. As Paul Hawken likes to put it, we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it GDP.
Biden set to levy 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs this week
And they will still look good compared to North American prices.

A new chicken tax... that tariff on foreign pickups that's been in place since 1965. And still took the Big 3 until the 1980s to come up with their own....
NA companies cannot compare with the heavily subsidized Chinese EV industry. Even with 100% tariffs and shipping, they will still be under $40k for a 4 door coupe and 350km range.
No way Ford or Tesla could compete with a $20k fully EV sedan. We actually have environmental standards here.

Even with the $34 billion in US subsidies GM got? And tens of billions in Canada?
I think it's more like they don't want to, and can drag their feet like they did with Chicken Tax ever since 1965.
Lobbying for tariffs is so much easier than actually competing.
China's building useable cars. Not hoping you'll drive to work or drop the kids at school in a Mustang MachE, F150 Lightning or GMC Hummer...

BYD absolutely has made a good EV. But they don't have any sort of environmental, crash, or labour standards. That is the subsidy that they can't get in North America. We aren't about to lower our environmental standards any lower, and we aren't going to employ people without any benefits or employing 12 year olds even if they build in Mwxico.
The only way we can even the field is tariffs. The fact that a 100% tariff still has the car as competitive says what NA manufacturers are up against.
