The Man Who Said No To Wal-mart
I think Banff's point is that mindless consumerism trumps the freedoms and liberties of people who are being oppressed by the PRC.
Granted, a lot of companies do business in China and eschewing the purchase of all Chinese goods can be difficult, at best.
But WalMart used to make a big deal about what a great American firm they were and now the PLA imprisons, tortures, and kills Chinese workers who protest the avarices of WalMart - and WalMart closed their store in Quebec where the workers legally voted to unionize. Can't have people organizing themselves to stand against a behemoth, can we?
Wal Mart is probably the only subject where Avro, IceOwl, and Derby could say whatever they wanted about the firm and I'd likely agree with them.
The firm is predatory in how it strip mines the economies of small towns, it is predatory in how they demand concessions from their suppliers, and it is legendary for their abuses of their workers.
Fuck Wal Mart.

you mean Bravo like blowing innocent men woman and children to hell over oil ? ....anyway this thread is loaded with contradictions . I got my speakers for $11.87 and me

Well, I'm anti-corperation, whether it be walocaust or the oil companies or the gap I really don't give a shit, I'm not in favour of them. It's the small businesses that drive the economy, not the huge corperations (even though they would like to think they do).

We have a long way to go to reach that state of mind and or thinking but I think I did a pretty good job in initiating a relavence regarding a small business versus Walmart . I think the state of mind of the public is that which is sick of gouging corps and retailers for a little quality in their lives so Walmart will have to suffice . Although I'm all for small business I doubt we will ever make it there .I believe this threat is clearly on the mind of the owner of snapper.

Responsible corporations, like Wal Mart used to be, bring products to market with an economy of scale and they provide needed things at affordable prices. If your local garage was to build a car from scratch it would cost easily into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Imagine if you needed a shovel and you had to go to the blacksmith for it. Such a thing would cost you easily $100 and then the quality would not be consistent.
Huge corporations have much lower aggregate administrative costs and they also have more control over their supply and distribution systems, something which cuts out the middleman who literally makes money on the labors of others while doing very little himself. Small firms, on the other hand, must rely on such distributors to get their goods to market.
Small businesses are the incubator for the big businesses of the next decade, but it is still today's big businesses that drive the economy.
I don't think you're really anti-corporation, you're against
unethical corporations.
There's nothing wrong with any enterprise that acts responsibly.
What about Snapper, the "hero" of the story?
Their not a small company so are they evil too?
To make specific items, you need to be a certain size. You can't have mom & pop making cars in the garage, and if they could, no one would buy them.
I agree that Wal-mart sucks but simply dismissing companies because of their size is silly. As for that, I hear you can buy you're Che Guevara and Anarchy T-shirts at wall mart for less.

Sorry, perhaps I should have been more clear, but I think you guys know what I mean. Yes, I don't like unethical corperations, but what is meant by the tearm "ethics" is subjective.
For example, look at what Symantec, McAffee, and Microsoft have now done with regards to computer security. I don't particularily think a lot of people would describe it as unethical, but it's certaintly stupid.

Symantec, McAfee, and Microsoft are in the position of responding to the acts of criminals. Granted, there are other bugs in their products (a pox on you, Bill Gates!) but to blame them for security flaws that criminals exploit is like blaming banks for bank robberies.
Oh, I almost forgot: Fuck Wal Mart.

I never blamed them for security
flaws. Though I'll blame MS for them. There are security flaws in MS products they blatently refuse to fix.
As for the other two, they are unfortunetly at the mercy of MS.
