What is wrong with the airline industry?

Absolutely well said.

There is too much capacity in the American airline industry, simple as that. Since the Wright brothers took flight, the entire sum profit of the commercial passenger airline industry is a loss.

In many communities in Canada it is an essential service. However the costs are ridiculous. We were about 500 km north of Winnipeg and it was a $ 500 return ticket on Perimeter Airlines. I've often wondered if using airships would be viable means for supplying northern and isolated communities. Their freight capacity would be greater than the aircraft they are currently using and the fuel costs would be lower. There is also the environmental factor (electric motors and Helium) and possibly a tourism one as well. It's just a thought.
It is darned handy, but the area was inhabited by nice people before there were airplanes.

This is an excellent and interesting idea. You might find
this thread worth a look, Shep.
I don't think rail would very well as the perma frost and extreme cold would play havoc with the rails.
