In 1973, Dad was buying gold and silver- in small amounts and advised me to do the same. Gold was
$37.00/oz. Instead,
I invested in whiskey & beer & women!!!

I remember that,Wasnt silver about $4.00?
I love gold and have had the fever all my life.I even got a BC free miners certificate way back when so I could pan for gold at perry creek, north of Cranbrook and I could stake claims.
I had a part of the buzzard and bones claim on same creek.
The waterwheel at fort steele was on that creek, nice placer gold there.

Can you still do that ? Like in Lucky luke !
I dont think so,you can pan on any creek in BC though,a claim only go's to the high water mark so you can basically walk through someones claim by going through the creek. Not advisable though if the claim owner is in his cabin as most have a shotgun.
Most creek's north of Cranbrook are claimed but you can buy a claim off someone,if it has a cabin then it's a bonus. There not cheap though anymore if you can even buy one now without paying for reclamation before you mine.
I understand but what I meant is: if I have a place, is there still gold to find in rivers there ?

Depends on where your place is,if it's a gold bearing region I would be panning the creek. It's not like it runs out,the creeks and rivers will continually be flooded with more gold as it erode's from the source.
Gold is also heavy and will find cracks and crevices in bedrock on a river or creek bottom and stay there for thousands of years or untill a flood or something disturbs the ground.
There's an old saying, gold is where you find it.
For more info in BC you will have to contact a mine inspector,I think Alberta's the same but I havent dealt much with gold here as there's not much compared to what's over in BC.The lost lemon gold mine is a hoax.
Any government office will have the info for you if you have the "fever".

My prospecting trips to the claim cost me about $300.00 round trip for gas so you didnt make much money off it but taking all the nieces and nephew's up to the claim to pan for flour gold and the look on their faces was priceless when they saw those flakes of flour gold sloshing around in their ice cream pails full of water.
Flour gold is not worth much but it's a good indicator of gold upstream somewhere.

Here's a gold story for you folk's in BC.
The waterwheel at fort Steele is from Perry creek which is west of the road leading north out of Cranbrook to Invermere.
Maybe ten mile north of Cranbrook there is a small sign pointing out Perry creek to the west.you drive as far as you can and then walk upriver to the big waterfall.
That's where the old waterwheel used to be and powered the gold operations there at the time.
The source for most of the gold downstream is above the falls,it settles in to the big pool below and allthough it's illegal, some don a wet suit and hit it in the middle of winter to suction dredge and snipe.
$10,000 worth of gold in one day is not unheard of,but then, there's only a couple people that do that.
So now the secrets out.
The guy I know that used to do it told me he pissed his wetsuit just to stay warm,he had the fever bad.
It's too late to Buy Gold.

I keep debating on buying silver... I really think its going to take off again
That would be a smart move. It is doing pretty well, considering...

In stock market terms: American banks are down so gold is up. If the banks bounce back, then gold will go down again.
Our banks are in better shape, so from an investment perspective, it would be smart to buy Canadian bank stock. If gold goes down, then it should be bought as well.
With both gold and Canadian bank stock in your portfolio, one will always be going up, no matter what the condition of the economy is.

Pretty sure I have a gold coin floating around some where.

I posted these pics in an earlier discussion on gold, back when an ounce was under $400 was the time to buy. File comment: Part of the hoard.

Actually that's not true ziggy. A claim encompasses the entire area that you stake. Regardless if it's on water or not.

Screw the "claims" owned by the huge companies. They just play games in the Omenica goldfields flipping shares and selling the companies back and forth to each other. 21 years here and the day after the permits are done... whoops! they sold the company. Environmental reviews and land claims start all over again from scratch.
Just go take the freaking gold, hire a local truck and shop at the local store for supplies. The whole goddam town will show up to break you outa jail if we have to.
Placer Dome, Noranda, Royal Oak... fuck 'em.. cut their fucking tongues out and fill their arses with buckshot.
It's fucking ridiculous here. We have one Band with recognized rights over the latest mine, the review process almost done (it was already approved in the 90s, but they sold the company) and our local Band is now claiming they need to be dealt with because one of theirs married one of the other Band's back in 1910. As the one Chief said in the paper, it's like your Granpa took a war bride in France and now the French are claiming that means France owns Canada!
Meanwhile their's an economic crisis and we're sitting on BILLIONS in gold....
@Hyack: Is there a face value on your gold coins ? It should be. Did you know they have legal tender in Canada ? Say it's written 50$, you can get 50$ in paper from it. Awesome eh ?
herbie @ Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:46 pm
That's right... but I'll give you $55 in paper...good deal, eh?

Then it's changed, just like a landowner can only own to the highwater mark, then it's fisheries or oceans dept.
Been many years since I had my free miners ticket but I allways remember walking through claims via the creek as it was safer, prowling around the bush on someones claim was not a smart thing to do.I'll check it out.
As for buying gold, with it at the price it is right now I would say buying stocks in a new canadian gold mine might be a better investment then the gold itself. The one I was at 3 years ago is a fully operating mine now and theres major exploration going on all around that area.
I'll have a better idea when I see the budget for the exploration camp I was at last summer,if they go full out, hair straight back with a drilling program then that usually means that they expect gold to do good. Some of these claims have been drilled for the last ten years, just lately they have gone back and started opening up these old exploration camps because of the price.

In BC you can claim anything that's not in a mineral reserve or already claimed. That means private property as well. However you do have to get the owners permission before starting any serious mining operations.
