I heard this story on the news, and CBC radio. The Texas Highway Patrol stopped one guy just east of Vancouver on the Trans Canada Highway, with his six year old and asked what he does for a living. The guy said "None of your business," so they made him get out of the car, and searched it with his six year old crying inside the whole time. The refused to let him near his six year old. Then they found out what he does for a living .He is a Vancouver cop. They said "If he had told us, we would have let him go." He said "Sure , if they had realized he knew the law they would have let him go ." He said "Sure, and if he didn't know the law they would have continued to violate the law. That is the whole point." They settled the law suit for an undisclosed amount.It would be interesting to hear what the amount was . I hope he is set for life. I think the mountie should have paid the bill out of his own pockets, not us taxpayers.

If a foreign cop harasses you in Canada, and you beat the crap out of him, it is not assaulting an officer, just defending oneself against an assailant and lawbreaker.
The border south of Vancouver is 300 yards north of 49 degrees north so any US customs or immigration people you meet there are on Canadian soil, and thus have no legal authority, by international treaty.

I myself would have freaked right out as well, and probably would have driven over the bastard thinking he was a criminal in fake uniform. I was about to make a similar comment as well. It makes no sense.

   

It was reported on CBC radio news and in the Vancouver Sun. They brought in the Texas Highway Patrol to teach RCMP how to recognize drivers on dope, by looking at them thru the window. Backfired big time, and the Texans were on the next plane out.
The Vancouver cop settled for an undisclosed amount, in his civil suit.
I wish it was bullshit. Sadly ,it is not.
A Coastguard guy in Comox told me they are being trained by the US coastguard to act like those assholes as well.
Harper has just announced he is slackening the rules, to allow US citizens into Canada in much greater numbers, to take Canadian jobs.

My niece's husband was replaced by a yank, when a yank took over Victoria BMW , started firing Canadians, and replacing them with his friends from Chicago.
After being informed of it, Immigration Canada did absolutely nothing about it.

As a resident of Washington State, I would have a shit fit if a highway patrol car from the Republic of Texas had to nerve to stop me and ask me any question at all. I would have called 911 on the spot and have the ignorant egomaniacs arrested for impersonating local authorities and then promptly deported (to Texas that is, not Washington.)

That said, I must say that I question the validity of this "radio story." All kinds of dither is beamed over the radio airwaves. I've heard call-in shows on the local CBC on-line and have heard some outrageous things that once properly researched, turn out to be seriously lacking in accuracy, to say the least. This is true of talk radio stations in the U.S as well. Maybe this is a tounge-in-cheek insult on the Vancouver Police Department? I'm going to do my own research and see what I can find. Personally, I think it may well be an "urban legend." It's funny as hell, but highly unlikely.

How sad, I must eat my own suspicions I guess. Really? As someone who has crossed between Seattle and the Lower Mainland of BC hundreds of times with little or no hassle and have never encountered highway patrol in BC of any kind actually, I find this encounter very disturbing. Do you believe that Canadian officals, including the BC Premier and the PM himself condone this sort of "foreign intervention?" It's like something out of an Orwell novel.

What possible purpose would this bizarre practice serve anyone? It would only antagonize It will only antagonize and enrage local communities if it allowed to continue. Hopefully this will prove to be a singular occurance, but alas, it will probably happen again to some poor unsuspecting soul whilst minding his/her own business. Is this part of a looming Pan North American Security Pact or something? Scary shit indeed!

Some people's "foreign intervention" is another's 'International Cooperation'. And no, it's nothing like Orwell. Notice it was the off duty BC cop that took exception to the Texas lawman's procedures, attitide and authority?



Texas law enforcement have a great deal of experience dealng with drug trafficers moving illegal things across the Mexican border. Makes sense to me to share information to keep them from doing the same thing to us. Many industries do such things all the time - information sharing is far cheaper than re-inventing the solution each time.

Or, we could just be paranoid and live our lives in fear.

   

If you people are OK with it, that's fine with me. Somehow I don't believe that the average resident in the Vancouver area feels that way. You obviously do and I respect that opinion. But I don't want Texas Trooper trash here in Washington State, that's for damn sure. It's not that I'm "paranoid" as you so glibly accuse, I'm just particular about who or what patrols our highways and streets. It seems that the primary thing that we can learn from troopers in such biased states such as Arizona, Alabama and the Republic of Texas is how to profile People of Color for no other reason than their particular pigmentation.

Do you really want the RCMP to take lessons from such a flawed and inappropriate model? Was the Vancouver policeman in question not of Asian descent? He probably did not look like a drug dealer, but he did fit into a target community, Chinese Canadian, perhaps? Do you really want your highway patrol to treat Asian Canadians and other "non-Whites" the way Southern and Southwestern US patrol treat those of Latino descent (and other POC for that matter)?

Think of why so many people around the world, including myself, love Canada. Stop trying to mirror this country in every way. Forget the example set by Stephen Harper and his minions in Ottawa. Or if you do, focus on the positive practices in the US, not those that humiliate and discriminate a target population. Canada is better than that.
