It sure does break my heart to see an American industry on the losing end of free trade...

Affleck attacks runaway productions
Last Updated Wed, 28 Jul 2004 16:12:44 EDT
BOSTON -

Ben Affleck, the star of such films as Good Will Hunting, lashed out at runaway productions while taking part in the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

"It's criminal," Affleck told the Hollywood Reporter trade paper. "It makes me sick. I can't stand it."

Runaway productions are film shoots that relocate from the U.S. to other countries, primarily Canada, in order to save money. Films like the Oscar-winning Chicago, which was shot in Toronto, have been a boon to Canada's film industry.

According to Affleck, runaway production is "probably the most important issue facing the state of California today."

'Runaway' strain in Hollywood
Newsflash: 'America is under attack. Not from Osama bin Laden, but from our peaceful neighbours to the north'

LOS ANGELES - The Canadian film industry dodged a bullet three weeks ago, though few seemed to notice.

The California Legislature, hacking through hundreds of last-minute bills to finish a budget that was already a record two months late and a boggling US$24-billion short, quietly killed a ballyhooed proposal that would have handed Hollywood $650-million in taxpayer bribes to resist the midnight urge of "runaway production."

Would subsidies and tax breaks violate free trade? I'm no expert...

Gonzo @ Thu Jul 29, 2004 10:52 am

Guess he never heard of free trade.
He's just upset because he hasn't had a good roll since Good Will Hunting. He even took a pay cut to have a film done in the lil' ol US of A. Was that really the reason he took a pay cut?

Rev_Blair @ Thu Jul 29, 2004 5:07 pm

Hey, we all scream when our industries get screwed by US tax breaks, subsidies etc.

There will have been 3 or 4 US productions shot in Winnipeg this year by the time winter hits for real. I don't want to see that go away because I know a few people who would be hurt financially by it. I speak out against US agricultural policies and so on all the time though. I do it because I know people who are being hurt financially by it.

Let Ben talk. Maybe we can get rid of all of the subsidies and tax breaks. Winnipeg would still be a cheaper place to shoot a movie because the cost of living here is nothing compared to most US cities and we have the right buildings for period pieces and a skilled workforce. The same no doubt goes for Toronto and Vancouver.

This issue is a nothing issue

I mean both sides have a argument........But if Kerry/Edwards are elected the NAFTA Agreement will be revisited

Rev_Blair @ Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:26 pm

The NAFTA agreement should be revisited...it screws all three counties involved in one way or another. Mostly by giving corporations too much power.

Kerry is going to tend towards protectionism though. Combine him with Martin who is willing to suck on almost as many things as Stephen Harper to curry favour with the US, and it gets a little scary. I'm afraid he'll give the store away like Mulroney did. Og course we'll likely be better off with Martin giving the store to Kerry than with Bush.

I'm all for fair trade, but these free trade deals never work that way....

This is not news and it's the way it's been since the decline of the canukistan ruble or rupee or whatever caribbean flowery looking monopoly type paper notes we use these days, including but not restricted to our other funny money - the loonie and too/two/to/tutuknee.

What is new is a failing falling star trying desperately to prevent it from falling so far all he will be offered is 'C" scripts - not much below what he has starred in and much closer to his performance level.

Now, if Handsome Jack and his faithful Chow had control over this, why Jacko would be starring in filems of his choosing avec co-stars of his choosing and all of this without mincing words - Hello Svend!

Far be it for me to reject outright the words the reject posted above - trilling sweet nothings as usual about his second favorite 'hate'.

As usual, much a doo doo about . . . .

That is great news and I hope they take all their movies from the US. Most films made in America suck anyways and I refuse to watch them. America is falling and soon will be a 3rd world country like it deserve. I can not wait for the day when America power ceases to exist. Americans will be to poor to support a military that occupies our lands all over the world, Americans will be to poor to visit our countries and reek havoc like they always do. We are in great times my friend and I suggest you watch closely as the American fascist empire falls.

I predict that China and the EU will become the next super powers that will spread their current Utopian like societies all around the world. No doubt Canada will also become a major player once it ditches American ways. Great times

QBC @ Sat Jul 31, 2004 6:10 pm

Maybe it's just me, but who cares what a guy thinks that would cheat on J lo. She is just plain hot and he gets caught with hookers in Vancouver. What a Putz he is anyway. The next film he shoots here in Canada, we should have a big party for him.

On a side note, is it just me or is everything out of Karra's mouth becoming more senseless all the time?

Rev_Blair @ Sat Jul 31, 2004 7:42 pm

Well, it isn't just you.

I was looking up some of her original posts. She makes total sense and actually sounds like a normal human being. However, I'm sure she is now the product of some creative writing class run amuck.

I should try writing our companies annual report in her style, I'm sure I'd be committed.

I worked security for old Ben and Morgan Freeman on a shoot in Montreal.
All I can tell ya is that its Hugh money to the local industry.
But Hollywood is a big whore and it will go anywhere to save a buck.
If Benny is so worried let him take a cut in pay.
