Beware Obama, McCain says

OTTAWA––U.S. Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, used a speech in Ottawa today to defend Canada-United States free trade and said his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, is a trade protectionist who threatens to undo a bilateral pact that has benefited citizens of both countries.

Referring to Obama’s controversial call for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to be reopened, McCain said: "Demanding unilateral changes and threatening to abrogate an agreement that has increased trade and prosperity is nothing more than retreating behind protectionist walls.

"If I am elected president, have no doubt that America will honor its international commitments – and we will expect the same of others.

“We will strengthen and extend the open and rules-based international trading system," he said in a draft of his lunchtime address.

In an unusual foreign foray for an American politician running for office at home, McCain also aligned himself on the environment with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Quebec Premier Jean Charest rather than fellow conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper....
