Hi , my name is John and I am an american citizen living in Tennessee . I've been studying up on Canada alot lately , and would love to move up there someday , as I have become somewhat digusted with the direction the u.s. has been going in - politically as well as socially . Although I have been born and raised in the states , I have realized that I have always had canadian tendencies , and didn't know it until I started learning about Canada . The subject I'd like discussed refers to a new book by Mel Hurtig called ' The Vanishing Country ' . The theme of it is the selling out of Canada , americanization , and loss of sovereignty - basically becoming the 51st state . How do you feel about these prospects ? If against them , what can be done to stop it ?
There is no doubt that Canada's sovereignty is compromised. The Canadian public and Government have allowed the castration of the Canadian Military to the point where Arctic Soverignty excercises have been cancelled due to budget cuts. The Canadian people have also taken advantage of the unspoken fact that the US in theory will defend us if we are attacked by a country outside North America.........Personally, I'm not convinced........Who's to say, if that ever happened (which it probably never would on a large scale) the US wouldn't decide that it was in their best interest and the interest of the Oppressed Canadian People to remain as a US protectorate.........???????
As for becoming the 51st State, economics aside, Canadians, while similar, just arent Americans......There are subtle differences and those are evident to me anyway, living just a few miles from the US border and a frequent traveller to the US.......
I don't think it'll happen.
Welcome to Canada ElectricBuford! It'll be nice to have someone emigrate here who can speak the language (in addition to their own, if not already english speaking) and who wants to become a true Canadian!
Yes welcome friend, and I hope you keep coming back and giving us your insights. Thanks for signing up
Hollywood,
I would like to believe that the USA would in fact be there for Canada, not for any other reason that it is Canada. If not, I do know that I and many others would be there on our own accord. Much like the RAF in the early days of WWII, rest assured you have friends to your South.
after being droven form the states befor why would they want us back. i thing that the us would leave us alone. why? we have our own working goverment and provences, ming you they don't work very well....yet still if the us tryed to manage us it would be hell for then us alway being down thier necks, never being able to tell canadian jokes any more... well thats what i think. thanks for reading
Ok ok ok guys.......Lemme qualify some of my remarks..........
I too have served for many years and trained with American soldiers, I know very well guys in the SF, Rangers, Nat'l Guard, Reserves........Many of them fine soldiers indeed.
What I was getting at is that I think the US is tired of having to cover our collective ass and I don't blame 'em!!!
I LOVE this country, but as years go by, I wonder what, if anything our government stands for! Peace! YAY!!! But how do yo get peace? Through having a large enough, capable enough and deployable ARMED force as a deterrant to rogue nations or would be aggressors.
Our country doesn't have that.......We have fine soldiers, sailors and airmen/women, but we don't have enough........Thats my big thing.........We do ALOT with the resources we have, but at the end of the day, are we able to defend our vast borders and our sovereignty? I doubt it.
I don't blame the US at ALL for getting sick of our freeloading government....It's irresponsible to allow another nation take care of the 'real world' security of another sovereign nation........Our government pretends we don't have any problem............But if 70 odd % of the PUBLIC even, is saying we need to increase our military and it's capabilities, yet the government pretends everything is ok..........What does that say about our country? IronMike........Not that you guys would ever need it, but I'd be happy to help the US out in any way they needed in the event of a defense issue......I know it goes both ways, but my point is that we shouldn't need to depend solely upon you guys to take care of your little brothers to the North......
Anyway guys, excellent points as always, looking forward to more debate.
GEEZ
How many personnel do you folks have in military service right now?
The defence aspects of the U.S. and Canada is an important aspect of the sovereignty issue . However , the main point of this post is to talk about issues relating to Canada's independence with regards to points made in my original post . Check out amazonca.com , and look up Mel Hertig's book ' The Vanishing Country '. This hopefully will serve as an overall starting point for discussion on what I am sure is of considerable importance for canadians . Cheers , John
RH, IronMike........I think the number is now considerably less than 70,000 people in the Canadian Military........I think now it's down to around 50-55,000.........
Of that number........Not many are deployable ground forces..........While the Airforce pounds ground targets and delivers supplies and resources (in our country barely.......What 10 operational but OLD Hercs?...)and the Navy deploys, transports and supports troops and shore bombardment..........There is only one kind of soldier who can control the ground.........Army.........Better yet, some kind of infantry..........Armor cannot hold ground........It can help take it, but at the end of the battle, the Infantry soldier needs to be on the ground to defend it.......We don't have the proper numbers to do so effectively in our own country.....
This is cool!

50K?, good lord. Being former Mechanized Infantry I hear you Bro. I see your concern!
Hey Highlander , I really liked your site . I'm very proud of my Scottish roots ( clan Buchanan ) , although I also have alot of german and french in me also . I noticed the hooters picture also - was that taken in Edmonton ? Also , I was wondering if you might tell me a little about Edmonton , because it is one of the cities I've considered going to if I can someday move to Canada . I also find Calgary interesting , although I'm not really a fan of country & western . Congrats to all you canucks , the loonie is up again - hope it keeps climbing . Cheers ! - John
