The Flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa and on all Government of Canada buildings and establishments across Canada, and at all Canadian missions in the United States of America (where possible) will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Friday, June 11, 2004, the day of the funeral of the late Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States of America.

Just in case you wondered why???

Reagan, because of his actions and policies, deserves nothing but our derision.

I suppose you think the peanut farming communist was better?

Rev_Blair @ Fri Jun 11, 2004 5:32 pm

Actually? Yes.

Rev_Blair @ Fri Jun 11, 2004 9:32 pm

Some of the friends and relatives of the people Reagan had killed spoke out today. link

This pisses me off to no end not that he was American or of his policies but that we lower the standard for a FOREIGN leader. We don't do that for the commonwealth unless the queen herself dies why in the name of all thing good and holy do we have to fawn over that man? Was he the PM? Would you see them do that for us if Brian Mulroney died? This is a disgrace and a testament to the fact that this country lives in fear of its neighbor not respect and it is high time the wind of change blew in Ottawa!

Rev_Blair @ Fri Jun 11, 2004 10:03 pm

It's all part of rendering unto Caesar, Scape...in this case on our collective knees with our mouths open.

Careful what you say about it though...calling this bullshit for what it is, is a dicey proposition in less enlightened places.

Reagan was, when it comes right down to it a fakir with a homey pesonality. He killed a lot of people and had the rest of us living in fear. It Yuri Andrpov wouldn't have died, making room for Gorbachev, we likely wouldn't have been here.

It's a funny thing...I work with a guy from Austria. We were listening to all the hoopla today and he looked at me and said, "We're lucky he didn't kill us." The Austrian is pretty far to the right. He's likely going to vote for Harper. He grew up in Europe during Reagan's reign though, and he understands exactly how dangerous and bad the man was.

Scape @ Fri Jun 11, 2004 10:25 pm

Speaking of Austrians...

It's not that I disrepect that the man is dead. Of course this is a loss, as any loss of life is, and he was one of the great leaders on the world stage, but how can any nation respect us when we can't even respect ourselves?

I seem to recall that the yanks lowered their flags when Trudeau died. There's not a thing wrong with showing respect.

Not a thing wrong indeed. I have a real hard time swallowing the idea that from Bangor to Miami to San Fransisco to Seattle and all points in between that ol' glory was at half staff for Pierre E however.

HockeyStud @ Mon Jul 05, 2004 7:44 am

as an american, i see nothing wrong with it. all it is, is the canadians showing the americans a little respect.

Rev_Blair @ Tue Jul 06, 2004 8:28 pm

Respect is earned, not given away because of myths and misdirection, Hokeystud. There are a lot of people in Central and South America wondering if Reagan owned the black Fords they last saw their relatives in, or just just rented them.

There are mass graves in places like El Salvador and Guatemala and Iraq with Reagan's name all over them. He was a mass murderer, at best.

respect that is not deserved.

Scape @ Thu Jul 08, 2004 2:27 am

Remove the names and just address the titles then. Is respect not warranted then?Like a 5,672$ fine?

-Mario- @ Thu Jul 08, 2004 7:19 pm

I don't think that we are dealing with mutual respect... but politics...
During and After WW2, the US, England, and Canada (just to name the main three for this forum) had very strong ties. This could be why we are still having our flags half-mast...
