Is the US disengaging itself from Canada?
The signs all seem to be there:
- for about the past two years, long before parity or new border rules tourism from the US has plummeted
- thickening of the border making trade and tourism more difficult
- requiring Canadians to show passports
- the probable next president wants to rework NAFTA
- US based manufacturers shutting down. In addition to the Oshawa GM closings the Toronto Star reported this morning that Hallmark Cards is moving manufacturing to the US and laying off 500 people in the GTA
Is the US distancing itself from Canada and what would that mean for our economy and way of life?
Your points are more affected by other things than an intentional "distancing".
For the border security, and other things. That has more to do with terrorism, as apparently the US thinks that terrorists use Canada has a launching point to attack America >.<.
There are many Americans who beleive that some of the 9/11 terrorists came into America from Canada. And about showing passports and everything else, that has more to do with security and economics than the US just arbitrarily distancing themselves from Canada.
And if indeed they are, then thank God!

Introversion is a sane reaction after a wall was hit.

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.h ... A961948260Stuff like this does happen. I would like to see an open border, but this stuff needs to be contained first.
All of the points made more have to do with the value of the US dollar and Canadian looney diverging. It is more expensive to operate plants in Canada now. There is also the Union issue, but that effects the Northern US as well.

Instead of asking if the US is disengaging itself from Canada, we should ask if Canada is engaging itself enough to prevent terrorists from crossing our common border.

Countries rarely engage one another except for wars.
I still like Canada.

Let's address this point by point:
- for about the past two years, long before parity or new border rules tourism from the US has plummetedTourism from the US to
everywhere has plummeted in the past two years mostly due to the falling value of the dollar.
- requiring Canadians to show passportsThe USA shortly will require US citizens to show passports to enter the USA, too. We're not asking anything of you here that we're not asking of ourselves.
- the probable next president wants to rework NAFTASo what? It needs a lot of work and I have no doubt a lot of Canadians would agree with that, too.
- US based manufacturers shutting down. In addition to the Oshawa GM closings the Toronto Star reported this morning that Hallmark Cards is moving manufacturing to the US and laying off 500 people in the GTAAgain, so what? I've lost three jobs in the past eight years to offshoring and outsourcing. Job security for Americans is a thing of the past and it looks like Canadians will soon have to figure out that a job and an entitlement are two different things.
None of this indicates a problem between the USA and Canada.
