Republicans are "Canada's friends"? Despite what Bart wants you to think some of us still remember which party was in control of both chambers of Congress and the White House when the Americans whacked us first with the attacks on BC softwood lumber and then on the Canadian beef export business with their ginned-up "mad cow" hysteria.

What I find amazing is they located the single source out of thousands of herds and millions of cattle in North America.
Somebody should get those Dept. of Agriculture fellas hunting down illegals or America's most wanted

Thanos @ Thu Jan 12, 2012 3:26 am

US Dept of Agriculture couldn't look for mad cow on their own side of the border. Thanks to "Canada's friend", George W. Bush, the USDA had about a dozen inspectors to cover the entire United States and a yearly budget that had been pared to the bone for almost all of the last decade.

Anyone in doubt over Canadian quality vs. American quality when it comes to food should just visit some of the McHell cattle feedlots in the southwest states. All you'll ever need to know about how the US views food safety, and water quality too judging by the hundreds of thousands of gallons of untreated cow shit that gets dumped into the rivers every year, is on full display right there.

You mean like Celine Dion?

She's made WAY more money on your side of the border.
Says a lot more about your tastes than it does mine. 8O

To be fair, that's probably just ecause there is more money on their side of the order. We still have to take responsibility for her. And by we, I mean you Quebecois.

No way...

If the English speaking ROC and the rest of the world hadn't gone all ga-ga for her, she would have stayed local, French and would have disappeared after a few years... and she wouldn't have changed her singing style to please that god-awful taste they have in female singers south of the border.

Stall the goddam thing until we get a gov't and business here that refines the oil here in Canada.
I just put up with a roadblock all day by the nates over Enbridge.
Goddam sick of the "We jess pick de cotton boss. None a our business wuffo!" mentality. Raw logs, fucking aluminum ingots... this is bullshit.

I can relate to your frustration but there are a couple of snags here. First oil is generally exported as raw product not as refined. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe it is possible to move gasoline by pipe because it is too corrosive.

Secondly re Aluminum ingots. Its not like the Bauxite was mined in Canada. It is refined in places like BC and Norway because there is abundant, cheap electrical power. To keep the ingots in Canada you need the apparatus to create a more developed product.

I'm guessing you have done your research on this topic so my question to you is...

Who's going to build this refinery?
Also....
Who's going to pay for it?
Who are we going to sell the gasoline to?

Ever wonder how much it costs to build a refinery?
Ever wonder how long it takes to build a refinery?

Also, how much longer will a refinery be of use to us? If it were 1950, great, go ahead and build it, but in 2012 that money would be better spent on investing in the technologies that will replace gasoline. It makes no sense to make capital investment in sunset products.

BartSimpson @ Thu Jan 12, 2012 10:22 am

Canada won't build a new refinery because between the First Nations, the Liberals, the NDP, and the environuts any smart investment group would not even bother doing a due diligence on such a project. Sadly, the only way a new refinery would be built in Canada is if the Federal government does it.

andyt @ Thu Jan 12, 2012 10:25 am

It doesn't make sense for Canada to refine all the oilsands. We just don't have the internal market for it, and shipping a dozen different products would be a nightmare in infrastructure. It's too bad, I hate to see us just sell the raw product, but that's what we seem doomed to do.

We should be building a pipeline to the east tho, so that they don't have to import oil. Surely there's an economic case for that.

What Bart said is just bullshit.

Good one, never thought of it in that way before. Tho with all the recent oil/gas discoveries in Canada and the US, we may be using oil for a long time yet. As long as fracking doesn't prove to be too much of a problem.

Fracking. Yikes! There's a disaster waiting to happen.

Not necessarily. I'm sure the Republicans in the Senate could pick off a few Democratic senators, especially those living in states where the construction project would be hiring.

Disagree. The odds are that President Obama is going to stomp any of the current clowns in the GOP race. Odds are much greater that the Dems won't do anything at all over the next few months that could even remotely boost GOP chances. As such whatever minimal bipartisanship happens in Congress has probably come to an end until after the election. Dems are cowards for the most part, including the Blue Dogs who behave like GOP'ers 90% of the time already, but they aren't neccessarily stupid enough to anything that would put someone like Romney or Gingrich into the White House.

You forget that this Democrat-majority senate just gave the president power to infinitely detain anyone without charge or trial; which will surely come up this election season.

Never underestimate the stupidity of Congress, and don't assume the American political parties are as unified as their Canadian counterparts.

Sturgeon was once projected to be home to four upgraders (refineries), but only one — North West Upgrading’s 50,000 barrel per day project — is currently expected to go ahead.

The North West Upgrading project was initially slated to begin construction in 2010 and to begin production in 2011. Here we are in 2012 and there's yet to be a shovel of earth turned on the project. Meanwhile, three other consortiums went so far as to conduct their RFP due diligence and then they decided that it was not a wise investment and they withdrew their proposals.

You may call what I said BS, but until you open a new refinery/upgrader then my comment stands.

Enbridge spokesperson Paul Stanway said his company is simply meeting the demand that is here today, but if there was upgraded crude oil to sell to the world the pipeline would be able to move it there.

Not a word about NDP, natives, etc. That's the bullshit part.
